Athletics
« on: May 30, 2019, 16:05:29 »
On 26 May I visited the English Athletics Championship in Bedford.

Most of the events were in the Men's Decathlon and the Women's Heptathlon, hence the same faces kept appearing.

First, the hurdles.

Discus.  Safety considerations made it hard to get the best shots.

Javelin.  Safety considerations were also relevant here.

Anthony, very nice.  Some great timing.  I know nothing about the XT-3.  Were you shooting bursts, is that the 200 f2 with TC 1.4 or are shooting stopped to f2.8?  Had s look at EXIF  :) .
Seems you had very good light,  I seldom seemed to have in the UK.  Wow, ISO 160 at 1/2000, cool, that is Goa light  :) .
Thanks for sharing, not much Sport posted here .
Cheers,
Tom

You’ve captured the athletes and their focus very well.
Initially I thought ‘how did he do that with the X-T1 but then I saw in Frank’s post that you own X-T3’s now. Nevertheless, the camera might have a great c-af but it is the photographer who has to press the shutter at the right moment. And you nailed it!
Thanks for sharing!

A great collection of perfectly-timed action shots but those long-jump sand-landings are the cherries on top!

Thank you, all, for your comments.

Tommie, I was shooting AFC at 11 fps.  Where the EXIF shows 200mm, this was the Fuji 200/2; where the dedicated 1.4 t/c was used the EXIF shows 280mm.  The light for the hurdles was good, but later on became overcast and we had a couple of rain showers.

Peter, you are right, the AF of the X-T3 is a major improvement over that of its predecessors. I no longer feel at a disadvantage to a DSLR user when shooting sports.

Ann, the sand does give some good opportunities for photos, unlike the foam mats used by the pole vaulters!

Great to see some sport here Anthony.

The first 2 hurdling photos illustrate how high the athletes actually have to jump to clear the hurdles.
The athlete with the number 6 on him in the Javelin has a wonderful expression of facial concentration
