D700
« on: November 21, 2018, 12:47:33 »
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question so please feel free to move it accordingly. I have just acquired a D700. I have a few manual focus lenses I would like to use with this camera. Is there a place I can send the camera to have a better non AF focus screen put in? What focus screens are available for this camera? I have no intention of trying this myself as I do not want to damage the camera in any way. Thank you.

it is easy to replace the focussing screen yourself or you ask a friend with more skills to help. If you work with wood or plastic tools or freshly washed and dries hands nothing much can happen. You can get better focussing screens at:

https://www.focusingscreen.com/index.php?cPath=22_92&osCsid=079125d2d3b98b68ba413702ca484fca

and installation procedure here:

PS: a used D700 goes for less than 400€, a focussing screen costs more than 100€. Is the relation good for you?

Thank you Frank. Yes....probably more than I wanted to pay but I would guess far better than trying to get accurate focus with the existing screen. Still not sure I want to replace it myself.

Do you have a recommendation as to which focus screen is optimal?

I'm using a K3 in my Df. Allows accurate focusing even with my Noct-Nikkors.

The best screen I used so far is the F6 derivate. For my D850 I bought the F6J, the D500 has a F6 type installed by default so I knew what to expect. I can reliably focus the 1.4/35 Ai-S which is currently the only MF lens I use

Replacing the screen yourself is easy with the supplied tool. A pair of cotton gloves would be handy in case you need to handle the screen.

Like Frank, I use a screen for an F6 but modified to fit my D3. It is worlds better than the standard screen. If Birna would care to lend me a Noct, I would be happy to report on just how good the screen is  ;D
