Michigan loon with one day old chicks
« on: July 09, 2018, 22:15:45 »
Inspired by Bob's fine loon pictures, thought I would share this one.

Taken 6-15.  Northern Michigan lake, hatched that same day.  In a perfect world, would wish for more dof for the floating chick, but still effective i hope.

As of a few days ago, both of these chicks are still alive, doing well, growing like weeds.  Have entered that awkward looking phase and will soon start losing their fuzz.

D500  500 AFS,  f/7.1  ISO 640, 1/800s.  Taken from my kayak.

Cheers

well thank you for the compliment Randy!.. i'd say you got a mighty fine shot yourself!..

by the way, handheld or tripod?

the whites on those adults is a challenge!.. at least for me.

Thanks Bob and Peter:

Yes the whites are a challenge.  Soft light helps.

I generally shoot with a pedestal mount.  It holds the Wimberley, and can swivel from side to side in the kayak.  I don't have any pictures of the kayak setup, but need to take one, as I am freq. asked about my setup.

CHEERS

I find a tripod or even a monopod too restrictive. So I handhold which is a challenge at low shutter speeds.

Great upper body workout.
