No experience with older versions, but the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR version, I have for about a year now, is probably the best I had with lenses (not only zoom lenses).

Mongo had the VR 1 for some time and used it on D800 and possibly on D800E. Found it generally to be an excellent lens. A couple of years ago had an opportunity to trade up to VR11 and did so. Use it on D810 and D4s. It is an even slightly better lens again. Have not yet tried FL model. However, have no complaints of any real consequence to every day photographing with the VR 1 on relatively modern cameras

Problem or feature with the mark II is that it does loose focal length as you move closer to the subject so it's more like a 135mm up close,,, not 200mm


So yes the FL or mark III is definitely the best of the bunch, although also very expensive.
