AF- S 70- 200 2.8 VR (I) and D850
« on: June 29, 2018, 18:12:32 »

According to Steve Perry the AF- S 70- 200 2.8 VR are one of the approved lenses for D850 (?!);

Thought this lens was «outdated» when used on newer bodies....
Experiences?

I believe that the VR (1) tended to vignette?

But if you are happy with its performance on your camera, there is no reason not to use it.

I try to avoid using Vignetting Controls in the software (or I reduce its setting considerably) because my experience is that, while trying to even out the corners, de-vignetting kills details and colour in the sky.

The original 70-200 VR f/2.8 works great on DX cameras and is considerably less expensive than the later versions. I have read it is a little dark in the corners on FX, but have no personal experience to verify that assertion.

And when I stitch panoramas, corner performance doesn't matter at all, because that is easily masked out.

This lens is probably my second most used lens on my D800E.
There is no illusion, it just looks that way.

Thank you, all 🙂.

I’m considering a used one, but as far as I can remember rumor has it that its «resolution» isn’t up for the task (when combined with high resolution cameras like D8xx...(?).

How large do you intend to print?

I doubt if you will notice much difference in resolution under normal repro. sizes.
(No-one, except for you, is likely to be pixel-peeping your images at 100%!

Thanks again, Ann 🙂,

My standard print size is A3.

Think I’ll give it a try 🙂.

I borrowed once and used it on the D800, it is fantastic, no complains at all on image quality

70-200 VR1 works fine on my D850.  Image is a 2/3rd crop taken at 200mm @f2.8.

I think you mis-interpreted the lens list, it's the new Fl 70-200, and the Mk2 version that are recommended for the 850.

I am contemplating to buy the FL as soon as I am able to hold my cameras again and take some time to test it. e-infin sells it for 1900€ which is a price I can easily sell it used later. Most countries do not have trouble to service Nikon Products. This seems to be a special feature of Nikon USA.

Nikon receive exactly the same amount from everyone for every product they ship.

I'm sure you can find many reviews of the old mark I lens if you look around,,,

It had weak corner performance at about 135-200mm so yes was mostly good for DX unless you use it for center sharpness which is very good.

As Jakov says, very noticable if you try to stitch images, no matter the overlap.

I had the 70-200 v.1 and gave it up due to the the bad corner performance. Made stitching for landscapes almost impossible as I usually shoot this kind of subject at 200 mm or thereabouts to get maximum detail.

Either the 125/2.5 CV or 200/2 AFS is excellent alternative for the given purpose.
