Messologgi, West Central Greece
« on: February 05, 2018, 21:58:42 »
I have been "absent" from NG since end of last April, due to a couple of projects that required a lot of my time and energy. Having finished,
I am returning to the NG company.
I visited Messologgi at the end of January for two days. It is a small town located in the west central part of Greece. It is famous for its lagoon and the seafood that comes from it. The lagoon has 2-3 openings that allow "communication" with the sea. At a certain time schools of gilt-headed breams enter the lagoon, the openings are closed with netted barriers and the fish remain in the lagoon. There are also sea bass, eels, grey mullet. There is no food offered to the fish. The lagoon is producing enough food by itself.
The most famous (and expensive) delicacy produced here is botargo (or bottarga). It is fish roe from the female grey mullet, dried, salted (not too much) and enclosed in bee wax for preservation. My first attachment is a photo of the product, taken from the site of the best producer (he supplies some top European chefs).
The photos that follow were taken with the Df and the 2.8/45p.

Thank you Bent and Jakov, it is nice to reunite with the NG gang.
Messologgi (or Missolonghi as you will see it in English writings) was the place that Lord Byron died in 1824, at the age of 36.
The second day I was there I got up very early to shoot the sunrise. But what I saw was something I encountered for the first time in my life.
Thick fog was covering the whole town and lagoon. It started dissolving after sunrise, but there were places outside the lagoon that it lingered the whole day. Some shots follow.
