Thank you everyone.  These wildflowers grow in the mountain meadows.  Not real high altitudes, perhaps 1000 M or less.  I am on the South Island now.  It is a beautiful place.

An update to my post flood saga, we sold our house "as is" closing about 2 weeks ago.  It will probably be demolished so that an elevated structure can be built on the lot.  Living in a small apartment where we can walk to nearby restaurants blurs the transition from our many hotel stays and home.

Carl, the location is stated above.  It is South Island.  Thank you all.

An update to my post flood life:  We sold the house.  It was beyond repair and all we got was land value minus demolition costs.  Still it wasn't much worse than what we could have sold it for a week before the flood given it's condition and wreckage to the property market from prior floods.    The apartment is OK, but too small for forever.  I ordered a Tamron 100-400 to replace my soaked Nikon 200-500.  It probably has all sorts of shortcomings, but it is light.  For my mobile, hand held style, that counts a lot.

Ahhh, New Zealand! I misunderstood you when you said "the" South Island, sorry.

I suppose there is more than one South Island.  How about South Padre Island?

The two main islands of New Zealand are un-imaginatively called "North Island" and "South Island", along with a number of place names such as "East Cape", "North Cape" and "Westland". At least you have a good idea of where to find them :o  In recent years it is sometimes called "Middle Earth" since the film trilogies Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed here.

Back to the OP, lovely colours and composition, nice work.

Unfortunately Lupins (the flowers) for all their beauty, are a weed here in NZ. New Zealand has many "braided" river systems where the river course meanders and changes course with flooding across a wide gravelly valley. Lupin roots bind the gravel and force the river into fixed channels. Since Lupins are legumes they fix nitrogen and increase fertility which encourages other plants to grow, which changes the nature of the river system. A number of native birds nest on braided rivers, so loss of habitat and increased cover for predators from Lupins and other plants means they are highly endangered.

Good explanation, Roland.

We have local councils spending money to remove lupins from where they should not be, as noted by Roland above, while well-meaning individuals scatter seeds because the lupin flowers are pretty.

When you said "the" South Island, I assumed that you were talking about a group of islands, and I had missed your original remarks that identified them, thus revealing your whereabouts. You do get around.
