Thanks for this.  I'm planning to acquire one of these lenses sometime in the near future.  I won't do the inevitable overhaul, but this knowledge will help me in dealing with the service personnel.

The lens you worked on (no.243428) is very early. The first Nikkor-N is no.242801 (the start serial number is taken from the lens focal length and max aperture). Your lens is just the 628th lens made!

He's not the only one

We did give the 6 mm f/2.8 a good work-out last year ... an 'Erik' lens if there ever was one

I will forever associate that lens to Erik, and Erik to the lens. He carried that monster though forests, around lakes, over mountains. At one point I thought he was going to swim in a river with it 

He is one resolute man for sure!

50-135 would be interesting. I have one which could use an overhaul.
