Nerd help needed: broken pin on 500/4 AI-P
« on: October 17, 2017, 08:01:00 »
The contact block of my 500/4AI-P lost a pin.

If it possible to take a pin from another contact block and replace it?
If not possible, can I find a compatible block on another lens and cannibalize?

Thanks.

The first generation(s) of the contact blocks lacked the metal guard that later versions possessed and thus are vulnerable to breaking off corners or losing a pin.

The best solution is replacing the original block with a new, metal one. I can get a replacement one if required. Just shoot me a PM.

Unfortunately, you wouldn't be the first finding yourself in this mess. I have supplied replacement blocks before.

Thanks a lot, Bjørn. PM sent.

Would the chip also need replacing or is it easily transferable from the old block to the replacement one?

BTW Bjørn refers to the rear backing plate, made out of metal, the front shell of the contact block is still made out of very tough plastic; They come as a set.

The "old" CPU print is transferable to a new contact block. However, utmost care is called for in extracting the print from the existing block so as not to rip the print lane. You have to remove the fixing screws and take the bayonet off in order to get access to the internals of the block. It has been done before thus entirely feasible, but a steady hand and patience would be helpful during the process ....

I have the JIS screwdrivers. Not so sure of the steady hand though, judging from my average quota of blurred pictures ;)

Would be nice to have a pictorial record of this surgery for future reference.  TIA.

The spare parts are in the mail as of today.

Recording the proceedings would be useful. I guess you would not be the last 500/4P user to request parts exchange.
