D810 Chiller finished.
« on: August 17, 2017, 17:31:36 »
Been working on this for a few months now. For long exposures at night strictly for noise reduction. At the beginning I had no idea how to do electronics work at all. Came along way.

WOW !! That is amazing. Congratulation on all that hard work and what you have learned.

And I think you should try the other idea about chilling a tilt screen. I'm curious if that would be enough or whether the heat inside the camera body would somehow translate through the circuits to make noise even in the chilled tilt screen? (Don't know if I worded that correctly?)

Well the air has to be chilled and then that has to effect the camera and translate into the camera through low conductivity plastic. Obviusly it works to some degree. Would have to wait for the d850 for this option. however I am doubtful i'll ever make $4k on photography to spend on a D850.

However having an insulated bag around the camera for condensation sake with the peltier in direct contact with the plastic behind the sensor would probably be more effective as chilling all the air and then the camera is less efficient. It is one reason i placed the camera atop aluminium plate that contacts the whole bottom of the camera and use an aluminum screw that goes into the camera. If it was easy i'd have directly placed the peltier n that plate.

Amazing amount of work

any chance of sharing crops of the results ?

When possible I do a fair amount of night photography noise is something I had taken as a given

Sure. I can tell you it can see the veins on the plant leaves. I'll do that when I get a chance after I am home form work.

Thought of replying yesterday, but only leaving a comment of "Wow" felt odd... But yeah, WOW :o , very impressive. Would be great to see a noise quality comparison...

How do I put you to shame?

Thank you, saw the ide aon google images once. Several designs out there. However it seems even with all my fancy doings it is not any better a performer than even the crappiest designs on google. which is interesting. I guess no matter what it takes 1 hour to chill down haha. However I think once chilled it chills faster. But removing the inital warmth of the camera takes time.
And I there are some noise comparisons, the noise will be consistent temperature to temperature. I didn't have time to post crops of my results yet. Will do ASAP.

Nice work - as a lapsed physicist, I can still appreciate the thought and effort that you have put into this device.

I used to cool photomultiplier tubes and microwave detectors with liquid nitrogen to get the noise levels down.  I doubt if our CMOS sensors would take too kindly to such treatment!

What a geek stunt. I thought it was all about cooling the chip???
