Michael, in the face of such beauty a technical question might seem petty. How to retain sharpness in the deep reds? There are many layers (!) to your result but i wonder if one of them is a tiny desaturation. I think I read once, it might be by Ann S (sorry Ann if I am wrong) that a slight desaturation of the red channel increases perceived sharpness. Does it in your picture?
