I like #2 as well.  I like it so much I had to ask myself why?   I can't answer why exactly.  I can say that the photographs I like the most are the ones that allow for maximum interpretation.  While this photo is taken in an urban canyon, there is no sense of restricted movement, the opposite in fact.  There is a way in and there is a way out.  The image is not saying, 'here is what I want you to see,' rather, 'I've found this open portal, please step through, and gaze upon the wondrous world we live in.'
