Noct-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 vs Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Coma
« on: March 23, 2017, 22:21:00 »
Ken Rockwell (love him or hate him) has a really good comparison between these two lenses showing how they correct for coma.
The 50mm for the top image and the 58mm for the bottom image.

It's interesting to note, coma aside, the sharpness of details in the two images is very close, perhaps even an advantage to the 50/1.2.

Perhaps; but unfortunately in that regard it's difficult to judge as the 50mm was shot @ ISO200 and the 58mm @ ISO400.

The Noct shot looks defective with camera shake.  If true, not surprising for KR.

Something does not seem right, even my 50mm f/1.8 G does not show that much coma/astigmatism as indicated by the Noct, not to talk about the 50mm f/1.2. The ultimate test is a vertical star shot that is carefully focused and tracked or one with adequately short shutter speed to avoid star trails.

The alleged comparison is simply worthless. Nothing distinct remains about target size, structure, and scale, and it seems unlikely a solid support ever was used for any of these images. It is impossible to ascertain much from these "test" shots, except that there are classic coma shapes exhibited with  the 50/1.2, which has been well documented many times before.

The Noct is *not* free of coma, far from that, but whatever levels remain usually cause little or no trouble.

I might set up a night shot comparison with the 50/1.2 against my Nocts (AI, AIS) if the inclement weather ever takes a break. The recent mishap with the 50/1.2 and its fragile Dandelion chip prevented me from using the lens at all, until the remaining contact pins also sheared off. :(
