Hugh, I believe that Iceland had forests in the past.
It consisted mostly of birch and osier and covered perhaps 60% of the surface. That was around the year 900.
Before the end of the Middle Ages north Norwegian settlers used it up and the sheep they brought finished the remains and the sprouts.
There exists an old report already stating the devastation.

Today there are initiatives, private and public, for reforestation.

Day 24. Eventually we reached the glacier zone in the south.

Day 24 - late afternoon and evening. Skaftafjell fell into shadows as the sun went on and we moved on to the big lagoons and ice beaches.

24 - 11 la bestia
24 - 12 cold as ice
24 - 13 power lines
24 - 14 excape to the cruel sea
24 - 15 short living germs on the black beach
