The Ox Race
« on: September 11, 2016, 21:02:29 »
I went to see an ox race a few weeks ago.
Every ten years the Burschenverein Steinkirchen holds an ox race.
This is rural Bavaria, as good as it gets ;-)
(A Burschenverein is an association of young guys who try to uphold tradition).

The oxen are trained for 2 years (they must be at least 2 years old), the riders can't have more than 70Kg.
There are long breaks between the individual runs.

Here are some impressions:

Not all ox like to run, so they need to some help...

Quite a few riders are female:

Looks like the girls like their ox:

After the ox race there was one round of cart racing.

The oxen where paraded around after the race was over.

80mm is sometimes a bit long...

Beautiful series Andreas. I really like first couple shots particularly. They have captured the essence of the race, the atmosphere, surroundings, everything. Thanks for sharing.
The race happens once in 10 years, wow!  :o

P.S: saw the other photos in the series, very nice!

Andreas, Enjoyable series.  Nice light, crisp images with good colours.  Racing Oxen is a part of many Asian cultures but not in Goa.  We have illegal Bull Fights(Bulls fighting each other) but I normally give them a miss.
Thanks for sharing

This is definitely miles better for the oxen then certain other forms of amusements.
And I think there are a quite a few images that show how close some ox/rider teams are.
I found it really scary that some of the support guys where barefoot...

Andreas, ##2&3 are hilarious, well captured, despite the bright light of the day

Great series, Andreas.  The last one is a Bayern trademark I guess   ;)

Love the contrast in the second one, with the electricity wires.

Now that I have seen all 63 of them: definitely a Mordsgaudi!!!!

And as the Oxen will be eaten later anyway it seems not wrong to move them beforehand along the lines of tradition....
