Now had the chance to use the 800E/80-400G combo in South Africa. Very satisfied.

At 400mm, with its excessive resolving power, this lens outresolving 36 MP sensor. It easily outresolving even Canon's 50 MP sensor, and still is equal to any long tele, or even better,  inside its price group, of course. Please pay attention: on the crop, above the pink door,  there is a rounded white connector. You are able to see bolts on it.  To say this zoom cannot be equal to the prime, especially if prime is  with any TC, is an ERR TO REALITY ( To return the favor!). THX!  LZ

Let me add the crop from the upper image, at its max magn. possible in LR, just for curiosity. 2018-04-11 004-1-5 by longzoom, on Flickr.     One more image, at most critical 400mm, minimal distance, F6.7 to get softer, as possible, background. 2 crops. Yes, it is really impressive lens, Gentlemen, thank you! But there is not the highest resolving power only - color, contrast/microcontrast, distribution of light, luck of coma, practical absence of most geometrical distortions, very reliable stability - to name only few, but not all, positives sides. But there are some sides one has to be very caution about - shocks from the front, as well as from sides! It is not , definitely, the lens to travel over the bike with! And watch the outside temperature difference - the FT may differ +/- 2 units, what is unacceptable absolutely, so, check it, time-to-time.  Yes, it looks like Nikon put the best glass and a lot of engineering efforts to create such the successful lens, out of questions! Let us see, what a new 180-400 will bring, and, while it is not for me - weight and price - a lot of colleagues are waiting for it! Thank you!  LZ
