Longzoom, In your experience with the AFS 100-400  AF-S 80-400 G how do you rate the general sharpness performance at 100mm vs. 200 vs. 300 vs. 400mm?  Many such zoom lenses 'poop out' at the long end.
Did you need to examine many copies before getting a good one?

Hi, Keith! I believe you really mean 80-400 AFS G lens. I can admit its equal sharpness thru the zoom, from 80 to 400mm, even wide open, with some climb of sharpness to the long end, contrary to the "popular" testers. To be exact, I was waiting for price drop, and got this lens from E-Bay, on my own risk, as I thought. To my surprise, this one appears to be the sharpest long zoom I've ever had, especially at the long end. Did take a look at my copy, my friends got 5 of them, which were almost equal on the field. There are a lot of images with crops taken by me at the  whole zoom range, so click on any pic or crop inside this topic, and EXIF from Flickr will tell you everything. But one more very important thing - take it into your account, please - this lens requires extremely precise Fine tune, at the long end. Even smallest mistake will make you think your copy is not up to your expectations. THX!  LZ

2017-04-16 004-1-2-1 by longzoom, on Flickr.    D810, ISO 12800 (12800). As you can see, there is no huge difference in DR or grain/noise to the base ISO.

Crop for you, to make sure you see all of resolving power of the system. For real resolving, click on the main image, and, on the Flickr, go to the crop, and click on it again. Then, you'll get all of it I am telling about. Thanks for watching!  LZ

Honestly say, this lens will be very nose-heavy on D7200, even with grip, as well as on any DX body, even on D500. Perfect balance for the 80-400G lens is reaching on the D3-D5 cameras, in case of my D810 the balance is better with 8 rechargeable batteries inside the grip, plus its own one inside the body. THX!  LZ
