Selfie, using Kristinas D800 in the hope of finding some more love for the 85
Nice Portrait.  Because you have the 85/1.4 and know it's qualities it's easy to be taken away by other or newly acquired lenses and 'forgetting' the 85/1.4.  And it is also difficult to choose when you have a very good 55mm and 105mm.

Buddy, the 85/1.4 AF-D is the best lens I have ever held in my hands.
Your self-portrait proves this point!

John, Jakov, I agree. The 85mm f1,4 is an amazing lens, and it is a lens with a very own, unique character. But so are the 55mm f1,2 Nikkor-S and the 105mm f2,5 Nikkor-P.

I think I should really stick that 85mm on my camera and not take it off before I am convinced that I can pick it up, take the money shot, and put it back in the bag again. At the moment, I am more accustomed to the rendering of the 55mm or 105mm. With either of those I know I can make the shot work at any given moment. The reason why the 85mm does not do the same for me, is that I hardly ever got a chance to use it. Kristina had it glued to her D800 until she bought the Sigma 135mm f1,8, and now the 85mm spends more time on the shelf then it deserves.

Every time I see it, I get a little sad.
My 85mm f1,4. The most neglected lens on my camera shelf.

Fortunately Kristina likes it and asks me to bring it along every once in a while, so I do get to play with it every now and then. And when I do, the results are generally pleasing. But still, when I pack my bag, I never seem to find space for it.

the 1.4/85 are great lenses. Too heavy for everyday use and if I add weight I'd rather take the 1.4/105E

for everyday use the 2.0 and 1.8 Nikkors of 85 FL are as good and the 85G of f/1.8 is exceptional, see also Mingh Thein if you do not trust my verdict.

Frank, I tried the 85mm f1,8G and kind of liked it. It has some strong points over the 85 f1,4D (no blue CA in hogh contrast situeations) but some flaws, very similar to the ones the 105 f2,8G has (green and magenta lateral CA) which is more difficult to correct in my experience.

The 85 f1,8G is very sharp, even wide open, and given how nice the 85 f1,4D renders, I kind of see that as unwanted behaviour. I prefer the hot-spot of sharpness the 85 f1,4D gives me most of the times. Maybe it's such a specialty lens, that I hardly find use for it.

The beard keeps getting wilder ;) New selfie will be made soon
