WARNING: Nikon Capture NX-D deletes images accidentally
« on: January 12, 2016, 05:44:10 »
According to the news post on the Japanese Impress Watch, the Capture NX-D (ver. 1.1.0-1.3.0 on Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11 only) may delete all images in a folder, if you try to change the name of the folder in the root directory "in the software window".

Nikon is planning to release the patch to address the problem at the end of this month.

I'm not sure how many folks are using NX-D, but hope this would be of any help.

Here is Nikon's official announcement in Japanese:

The announcements in other languages should follow shortly.

Apparently by design not accidentally :(

Write-protect the folder first perhaps? Or ensure one never make edits directly into the source file folder, which is bad practice in any work flow anyway.

Accidental (or intentional) deletion of any files or data should be the first thing any software must avoid.  If I remember correctly, there was similar trouble with the LR not so long ago.

Making backups is always the most prudent and easiest way to protect the data.

Thanks for the real user report, Pedro.  You could be lucky, but I still think it is worth being careful.

According to Nikon's announcement, this happens "in some cases" (I mean, if I would translate the Japanese text), as any of usual cases for this kind of software glitches.

Thanks Akira for flagging this.

Thrue to be said, I don't use a lot NX-D...

Akira, were you able to recover any lost images through the use of third-party recovery software, or similar solution? (I don't even know what I'm implying by "similar". Prayer or a smudge pot of burning sage, perhaps.)

This thread is timely as I had put it to mind to do some experimenting with NX-D tomorrow, or soon thereafter. Thank goodness for insomnia, or I might have never signed-on and discovered this thread in time to avert a possible disaster. I'm surprised Nikon hadn't sent out a warning, to those of us subscribing to their mailing/messaging service. But before I start accusing anyone of anything, let me be certain first that I hadn't disabled or unsubscribed from the service.

I'm afraid I myself used only the earlier versions briefly when I was using D7000.  I didn't like the user interface even though the resulted images were very good.

Pedro, thanks for the follow-up.
