Two different approaches to shooting the moon over Titus Canyon, Death Valley.

First with the 7.5 mm f/5.6 Fisheye-Nikkor on the D3X. Next, same scene with the Noct-Nikkor. I had a focusing issue with my Noct at the time so it wouldn't focus to infinity, but I don't think that matters much for this scene any way.

By the way, the cyclist to the left is Lloyd Chambers.

I have not photographed the moon many times but I did so last night to get a feel for the new 200-500/5.6 + TC-14E III performance in a slightly demanding task stability wise.  ;)

D810, 700mm, f/11, 1/125s (EFCS active), ISO 100, MC-30 with two seconds delay to let the lens stabilize. I noticed that slower speed shots were distinctly blurry. There was some thin cloud coverage which meant the shot isn't quite as clear as it might be on a more clear night.

And this was made at mightnight yesterday. I think a set of three exposures: one for the moon, a second for the window (to get the warm colour to register), and a third for the sky with some exposure blending would make for a better result but I just wanted to show the halo around the moon that we saw last night at midnight. This is a single exposure shot. The lens is 20/1.8.

I took these as illustrations for the book "Nothing grows under Moon Light" (Norwegian title "Av måneskinn gror det ingenting" by Torborg Nedreaas, published in 1947).

I convinced two of my nature photographer friends to act as mode for this staged shoot.

We shall never be astronauts and go to the moon

An IR capture with my Nikon D1 (IR modified) and the 28/3.5 Nikkor.

A bleak winter moon over Oslo, capital of Norway, at Winter Solstice. The distance across the Oslo Fjord was approx. 25 km.

An early favourite, with the F4 and 85/1.4. The full spring moon as a backdrop to the catkins of a Silver Birch Betula pendula.

This image is familiar to me from your original website, but didn't know about the Norwegian idiom behind the title.  Thanks for the explanation.

I love this kind of strong compression of the perspective!

Bjørn, is it really a moon?  Isn't it a famous trick using a fast lens wide open?

Lots of great images!
Here is a capture from Nyksund in Northern Norway, moon lightening the landscape through the clouds:

Absolutely and definitively the moon. Shoot around 2300 or so in the evening in early spring, at the time of the year when the famous Nordic "blue light" starts to be significant.

Two days later* when  moon was no longer full,   I shot this from my back porch, about the same time of the day. Same camera and lens. The tree is a black alder Alnus glutinosa at the end of my garden that I often use as a photo target.

* sorry, misread the photo dates. The catkins were shot at 28 April, 1993; the alder 30 April, 1990. Thus moon development cannot be directly compared. But you get my point nonetheless.

Thanks for the detail.  I will investigate the technique.
