Great fame and tragedy
« on: August 14, 2015, 23:26:55 »
The Abel Prize of 2015 was awarded to the mathematicians John F. Nash Jr. and Louis Nirenberg "for striking and seminal contributions to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and its applications to geometric analysis".

I was present during the award ceremony (the prize was awarded in person by H.M. King Harald of Norway) and during the Abel Prize lectures. John F. Nash should be well known to many for the movie "A beautiful mind" about his life.

The tragedy occured just a few days later when John Nash and his wife both were killed in a car accident on their way home in a taxi from the air port in the US. Here is  a link to the obitual in the NY Times:

Some pics I snapped during the events are included.

2. The King and Nash

3. Nirenberg during the award ceremony

4. and 5. A few examples from the work of Nash. (5. illustrates how to process a piece of paper in order to put it in your pocket without folding it)
