Lovely observations.  Your choice of lighting is excellent.

I used to own this lens.. and it is very heavy... built like a tank.

I sold it in 2012 for 2k USD.

Thank you guys for the comments.
I intended to test the peaking highlights for this kind of pictures.
Still don't like it.
Latest Z6 firmware included AF eye detection but not a focusing aid for manual lenses. Sad.

What about using live view + zoom. Doesn’t work?

Btw: it must be a challenge to use this lens in the woods! I like the results

Z cameras have "live view" all the time, either in the viewfinder or on the rear display. Zooming into the image works well (and can be put on Fn buttons to make a shortcut), as does focus peaking if one is attracted to that feature. Provided a lens such as the 400/2.8 AIS is attached to a good tripod/head, it should be a breeze to work with in conjunction with either Z body.

I tried it and was with a good tripod, but still prefer if that red square turn green when focus is achieved with a manual focus lens.
Peaking highlights and / or zooming the viewfinder may be great for macro work.

I use the zoom function with long manual lenses all the time. As Birna says, put zoom on a FN button. I find focus peaking masks some detail and colors the image so I usually have it off. Took me a while to find what I like so don’t be discouraged right away.

I have the zoom function on my FN button for a while, but I don't like it. With this 400mm for instance, I waste some time to find the zoomed point in the picture.
