Title: The new Noct 58mm f/0.95 - Bet and Win!!!
Post by: atpaula on March 25, 2019, 21:25:02
How much this lens will cost? Considering the USA Nikon website, in US dollars.
The best guess will be entitled to a window view ticket to the next flight to Mars.
Due to this promotion budget restrictions, it is a one way ticket.
If the winner intends to return to planet Earth he/she will have to purchase the return ticket.

I think it will cost US$ 4500

My guess is USD 6200.

Had I been twenty-some years younger, going to Mars would be a very tempting proposition.

It might make the price/value of the classical Noct (58mm f/1.2) even more expensive... 8)

No bashing intended, but too heavy, too big, too intrusive for a standard lens and for mirrorless concept.

The price will be set according the marketing policy.

I would say ...between 4000 and 7000 USD. ;D

yes Keith, I guess this is what people will actually have to pay for the lens, just a Dollar short of 5k. Nikon policy seems to be to make the list price higher than they actually expect to receive. My 5729€ is incl value added tax as the 1.4/105E is 2429€ on the list and just short of 2000€ in the street market

I think Nikon is having trouble to put this lens in the market.
I read in several places it would be released in spring 2019, which is in the past now.
Their roadmap says 2019 only, but "coming soon" is there since the beggining of times.

I don`t have neither the Z6 nor the Z7. The new Noct is not an option to me. According to the hefty rumored price tag I would rather suggest waiting for a used one coming up for sale. As earlier mentioned I bought the Noct-Nikkor 58 1.2 AIS brand new from Japan in 1983, just in reach before a trip to Paris, France. When used with my Df I will share some results!

Not surprised. It'll be a killer optic.

The MTF graph is absolutely amazing.

The Norwegian RRP was a tad higher thsn I had wished for, though (NOK 93990,-). Ouch. Have to reassess my financial status before I place a firm order for it.

I have different words, but the same result. For me, it is the bokeh in which to stack islands of focus via a highly-corrected lens

To get this Noct, I am selling a Cambo Actus-XL-35 View camera, a Zeiss Otus 85mm, and a Hartblie Supperrotator 120mm Macro lens, the same lens used in the classic Hasselblad systens, if anyone is interested.

The starry sky image on DPReview shows a shocking amount of coma present given the lens.  I personally would expect a $9K 'Noct' to have virtually no coma.  Not that my opinion matters much, I am certainly not a viable customer for a $9K lens.   ::)

We will have to see how it really performs, how the bokeh is, how Coma corrections are, whether it will show some indistinguishable character.
For me the focal range 50-58 is not of primary importance, and it is very expensive, currently i dont think I will go for it, but who knows ;-)

Congratulation - the 200 f/2 is insane, and probably more useful than the 58 mm lens imho.

I would use a clear or UV protective filter if the lens is exposed to dusty, sandy or salty conditions, or heavy pollen which could damage the front element. Otherwise use a hood to protect the front element from fingers, bumps etc. Normally I don't use a filter as the extra glass-air surfaces are always going to increase the chance of flare and reflections, and could cause minor loss in micro contrast etc, plus it slows me down if I need to swap it out for a polariser or other filter.

UV filters can be of some help in landscape pictures by removing UV light which can cause haze or a blue cast, but in these cases often a polariser is more effective. I'm not sure if you shoot landscapes, so that not be relevant for you.

If you are going to use one of these filters, choose one with the highest transmission. Depending on where the UV cut-off is, it may introduce a color cast but white balance can take care of that. If you want it simply for a protective filter, then one with high transmission into the violet/UV spectrum might be a better choice. Also consider the mount, a good quality mount is not going to bind or get stuck. I'd say any of the high quality filters from Nikon, B&W etc are fine.

The "BW XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano Coated" is the best on the marked, most neutral protection filter.
It has the MRC coatings and on top of this the Nano coating Nikon also uses on their top end lenses to keep it easy to clean.
I agree with Roland on all points as well ;)

Michael,

I like the  X4 UV filters from Breakthrough Photography. I have them on all of my Schneider Kreuznach lenses. Very neutral, multi-coated and I like the knurled ring which makes it very easy to remove and to tighten. If you are going to be putting the filter on and taking it off regularly I think you would appreciate this design. they are very thin and resistant at the same time. I also use a 105mm CPL from then and it is very nice.

The "BW XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano Coated" is the best on the marked, most neutral protection filter.
It has the MRC coatings and on top of this the Nano coating Nikon also uses on their top end lenses to keep it easy to clean.
I wondered about the Nano coating ... the "Nano Crystal Coating" that Nikon used is very delicate. It is essentially a thin layer of particles that is very dense next to the glass, so with similar refractive index. The particles become progressive less dense towards the air surface, the structure becomes more open and porous. It doesn't have a definite "surface" at the glass or air boundaries which could cause reflections (which is why it is so effective), there is simply a smooth gradient in refractive index between glass and air which allows much higher transmission. The open structure of the coating at the air surface must mean it is very delicate, it would easily be crushed by touching or cleaning, and IT could be clogged by oils from fingerprints etc. So Nano coat can only be used on internal surfaces which are well protected.

Many manufacturers also use Fluorine coatings which repel dust and fingerprints and are easy to clean, I don't know much about them. Maybe they also have some sort of nano structure but it would be quite different from Nikon's Nano Crystal Coating, so the term "nano" becomes quite confusing.

Nikon's own ARCREST filter should also be worth considering.  I read a comparison test by Impress-Watch, and ARCREST was the best one, especially in terms of supressing reflection.

It seems that "nano" at B+W is what others call 'flourine'.
I have used Nikon NC and B+W 007 MRC, but not the 'B+W 007 MRC Nano'.
The Nikon NC seems the clearest by eye, but I have never run a real test. Heck, an old Nikon L37c seems fine to me.
That new "Arcrest" Nikon filter appears not to be sold by USA retailers. :o
Added: Looking at the Breakthrough X4 filter, I'd make sure I could return it if the expanded grippy ring interfered with a detachable lens hood. The rings of my Nikon NC 58mm filters are just wide enough to interfere with the attachment/removal of the lens hoods on my Zeiss ZF 35/2 and 28/2 lenses.  The B+W 007 MRC 58mm do not interfere on those same lenses.

So far all the Breakthrough filters I have do not interfere with the detachable hoods at all, however I noticed than on my macro lens (uses an 86mm filter) the filter feels wider ONLY when I put the hood back on reversed for storage in the bag, who knows, it may be that this longer hood is a bit narrower than all the others I have.

Different lens manufacturers with different tolerances may be another story.

If you decide to try them they have a great 300 day return policy.

Some portrait pictures, I'm not impressed to be honest, I had much higher hopes for a cleaner image regarding APO correction. They also show how difficult it is to get the focus right. Most funny detail is that f/0.95 turns into f/1  ::) That is just not ok...

"f/1" is due to the RAW engine used. Photo Ninja reports f/0.9 (!), Silkypix 8.32 f/0.95.

The portrait of the lady I tried (DSC_1275.NEF) is stunningly sharp and the depth of field extremely small. Her left eye is in perfect focus whilst the other is going out of focus ...

I see more colour artefacts than I had expected, but suffice it to say, the test subject and light would not be kind on any lens.

To my eyes 1275 has slight front focus, her nose is sharp to the tip, at least, much sharper than her right eye, so depth of focus could have been moved further back, I would have preferred that. Nice that it's just the raw converter misreading exif data  ;)
Title: Re: The new Noct 58mm f/0.95 - Bet and Win!!!
Post by: Birna Rørslett on October 28, 2019, 10:39:57
EXIF information is the same and probably read correctly, this is about presentation incl. rounding off of figures. f/0.95 is 1/6 EV "faster" than f/1 if memory serves. EXIF specification allows only down to f/1 thus the information must come from Maker's Note.

Some RAW engines literally choke on the NEFs taken with the f/0.95 Noct.

Here is what the poor RawTherapee spat out ....

After RawTherapee, running this NEF through NX-D was an anti-climax. Just smooth, perfect rendition and all the colour artefacts are gone.

By the way, NX-D also reports f/0.95 for this lens.

To show the lens performance with NX-D, here is a screen dump of the NX-D output at 100%. No claims for colour accuracy as this is from a secondary monitor not colour-profiled. Do click the image to expand it to 100%. This is f/0.95, remember .... Unbelievable.

Run straight through with no corrections applied -- probably could be tweaked better but that wasn't the point here.

The main impression is the lens is insanely sharp, but in a very smooth, velvety manner.

A small under-exposure would change the effect of the glare a lot, often seen it shooting the classic Noct-Nikkor as well as other sharp fast lenses wide open like 50mm f/1.2 f/1.4 and lately I have seen it on 105mm AF-D f/2 DC - small changes in exposure can have huge impact on reducing glare and issues with highlights.Rendering is close to Noct-Nikkor, smooth tonal transitions - Very nice!

Some portrait pictures, I'm not impressed to be honest, I had much higher hopes for a cleaner image regarding APO correction. They also show how difficult it is to get the focus right. Most funny detail is that f/0.95 turns into f/1  ::) That is just not ok...

Not too impressed too  by the galleries available so far.

BTW there appears not be too much practical difference between f/ 0,95 and f/1 - more like a renommée issue (like the former 1/300 X sync speed). Nikon should have been more courageous and make this lens f/0,5 or at least f/0,7

f/0.7 would incur minimum 4*weight of current design.

Probably yes, but that would not be the heaviest lens that had been lugged around (the 7 kilo 300/2 or my 6.x kilo first version of the 600/4 comes to mind). yes its insane for a "standard" focal length but even the f/0,95 Noct is the first 58 mm with tripod mount

That would be a monster  :o I think they are on the money with sharpness and the look and feel, the corrections are just a (the only) compromise they apparently had to do,,,

Well, a huge variation in prices all round the world...

(today's exchange rate)

Japan 1265000 JPY = 10469 €
Norway 93990 NOK = 9205 €
Netherlands 8999 € = 8999 €
USA 8000 $ = 7213 €

That's a fork of about 2800 € !!!

Now, the results of your estimates.
If a bracket  (Francis: 4000$ to 7000$) has been given, I have averaged it out to (low+high)/2 (=5500$ = 4959€)
All converted to €

1st Frank Fremerey: 5729 € (wins trip to Mars)
2nd Birna Rørslett: 5590 €
3rd Bill De Jager: 5407€
an then Erik, Francis, Nikfuson, Pluton, Aguinaldo (4959€ down to 4057€)

Fons, I don't have a converter for old currencies, I have to pull your estimate of f 2.93 :(

Ciao from Massimo

Yes, the shots I've seen besides Birna's have not impressed me. Perhaps many of the photographers are not used to manual focus?

Even after all this time, I'm still not 100% convinced that CNX-D was the ideal path for Nikon to take. CNX3 would have made more sense .. anyhow
There seems to be a very small distortion associated with the lens too.
EXIF/makernotes don't seem to display it, but distortion control was activated on the file in CNX-D. Made a very very small difference to geometry of the image switching on and off .. and the reason for my distrust of CNX-D
Whilst clicking distortion control on and off, I also noted a huge colour change in the image. Like it went from Portrait to Vivid(or Landscape) and or a WB change.
Models skin changed to a warmer rendering  .. nothing else played with other than the tick box for distortion. Very strange.
Anyhow, Erics comment re slight green on right eye .. easy fix in CNX-D with the activation of the axial color aberration(from off to on) .. default setting is 50(not touched) .. just clicked on. fixed.
(image converted in CNX-D).

Only edit was to the axial color aberration in CNX-D. Distortion was left at on(as shot).

Like Birna said .. insanely sharp considering wide open and such a wide aperture. For some reason, the online jpg doesn't render anywhere near as sharp as on the PC too.

By default, portrait only uses a low sharpening routine, and fairly coarse at that. Setting sharpening to (say) 4 instead, renders even more pop in the sharp areas of detail. tweaking even more reveals even more again. Very good .. in face insane!  ;D

My copy of the NOCT was charged to my card today at B&H, so I assume they are readying it for shipping. It will arrive tomorrow, Saturday, Nov 1st. I can't wait. For me, for the work I do, this MAY be the perfect lens. If not, back it goes. LOL.

I will (if Murphy doesn't intervene) get my hands on the Noct tomorrow...no, not buying  :)
Will report back in due time with findings.

hello Massimo, I guess you have to work on your calculation again. Averages tend not to be lower than the lowest of the values you average.

11.000 + 7000 = 18000
half of which is 9000

plus: US Value is without VAT, the others include VAT

Where is the 11000 coming from?

Francis had made an estimate of 4000 to 7000 euros
LOW estimate=4000
HIGH estimate=7000
And you tell me that the average is 9000? (2000 above the high estimate!)

I stand on my 5500 = 11000 / 2
There is no VAT in the US as we have in Europe, maybe sales tax  (2% up to 10%)
Add 8% sales tax? OK that puts Francis in 4th place with 5355.72€
You still win the trip to Mars :)

First try with the beast turned out to be a positive experience!
Wickedly sharp from the start block and as the opening got smaller it only improved.
Bokeh as beautiful as one can wish for. Pics later.

Ok, back with more techie stuff. First plane of focus at ca. 2m. Pretty flat!
I've started a separate technical thread for my tests.
