Hello all,
I would love to see manhole covers from around the World :) This one was taken in Budapest last year. I will try to take some from Toronto when I get a chance.
Cheers,

Good one, Jack.
I notice that some of these covers lack an access hole, if that's the proper term, for inserting the tool that lifts the covers. I wonder how those covers are raised if there are no apparent holes for prying up the covers? Maybe someone here knows. ???

If you look carefully there is either a hole for a hook, a center loop, or a notch at the edge for all but one, and that one is an inset to a larger cover.
-
I think one exception is the Budapest one. It's hinged and has an interruption in the bezel for a tool to pry it open.

That's the one that prompted my question. I went back and found the bezel interruption, and hinged, no wonder!

Found this in Höganäs Sweden, on a recent visit.

Found this in Copenhagen, guess who ;)

Nice one Bent! This one was found in Toronto Canada. Not sure if I should post it in "Minimalism" thread instead ;-)

Here's one from Greenland. Misplaced my notes, but I think it's in Sisimiut.

To me, it looks more ike a drain cover, than a manhole cover.

Indeed, the combination of the beautiful landscape and the manhole is quite unique! And I like this image itself!

Interesting image allowing some varying interpretations. :D

In the L.A. area, the manhole covers themselves are very drab and undecorated, and so require additional help.
-
Here's one from Stanley, in the Falklands.
-
I had never thought i would be photographing sewer covers ...
[Edited to add: this is in The Netherlands, to more precise in the town of Eersel. "Vuilwater" means dirty water]
-
Seem like ordinary things but so enjoyable to watch, guys. All nice photos here. I am glad I started this one.
Please do not forget to give the location. It is nice to learn where the beauty is in the world :)
Cheers,

An oblong one in my alley.
I expect the British to do things differently, and they have not disappointed me!

There are also round ones around, but I could depict that one without breaking any isolation controls!
I thought the weed added a nice touch!

Corno alle Scale, Apennines, near road's end just before the ski slopes: 1500 m
I really liked the beech leaves and nuts on top of the manhole, they add uniqueness to an otherwise ordinary piece of metal.

A manhole cover in Beaverton, Oregon, a few blocks from the main Nike campus. No leaves--the sidewalk sweeper must've been a bit ahead of me...
-
A really small one (10 cm diameter).
Almost invariably they paint arrows across them (e.g your photo, Ashlandish). I understand it as a way to mark the direction for opening, or the prying open point, or the direction of water flow, when not evident on manhole itself.

Wind-decorated manhole
A pomegranate plant was losing its flowers, wind carried them a short distance and they were captured by the edges of the manhole...

A nice square one...
The hole underneath is round I guess. Otherwise the lid can fall down.

Round and Elliptical
Since the diagonal is 1.4142x the sides, it would be very easy to drop the lid inside the hole. I suspect there's a hinge (see center top) to prevent such an instance. You lift it from the opposite side (see lower L and R)
Two smaller ones, one round and the other elliptical. They are used by the Fire Brigade.

Entrance to a WWII bunker in La Línea de La Concepción. If I´m not mistaken it was a german project to have defenses against Gibraltar. This zone was very interesting at the time with many spies, crossing point from and to the mediterranean and from and to Africa-Europe connection.

Sorry for mine too Zang - I do not know the alphabet. Just guessing - I looked up Japanese and it has some resemblance. It would make sense it spells Tivoli.
Added: Tivoli has a Japanese tower from around 1900.

A fragment of a manhole cover from the city where lived until a year ago and soon will be moving back to.
The local monastery church is the burial place of three kings and archbishop Absalon who had the first fortress built in the city that became Copenhagen. He was known as the founder of Copenhagen, but archaeological excavations from around 2008 apparently tells a different story.

Correct Fons. The city name comes from Sor Ø (or simply Sor). The area was surrounded by lakes and bogs when a monastery was built in 1142. There are 3 lakes near the city today.
Is it your son that lives in Copenhagen? Yes, it's nice to get rid of restrictions soon despite the high level of infections ... let's see how it works.
-
Thank you Lars,.... Yes! ;)

Thank you guys for sharing the stories. You are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I even did not know how to type Sorø in google map so I just copied it from here :)

Thanks Zang - glad it makes a manhole cover a bit more interesting when put into context with a small story ;D Yes, it's a nice little city in rural surroundings with lakes and forests, but Denmark is quite flat so I'm always impressed by mountain landscapes :)

Den standhaftige tinsoldat - The Steadfast Tin Soldier
HC Andersen Short version;
On his birthday, a boy receives a set of 25 toy soldiers all cast from one old tin spoon and arrays them on a table top. One soldier stands on a single leg because, as he was the last one cast, there was not enough metal to make him whole. Nearby, the soldier spies a pretty paper ballerina with a spangle on her sash. She, too, is standing on one leg, and the soldier falls in love. That night, a goblin among the toys in the form of a jack-in-the-box, who also loves the ballerina, angrily warns the soldier to take his eyes off her, but the soldier ignores him.
The next day, the soldier falls from a windowsill (presumably the work of the goblin) and lands in the street. Two boys find the soldier, place him in a paper boat, and set him sailing in the gutter. The boat and its passenger wash into a storm drain, where a rat demands the soldier pay a toll.
Sailing on, the boat is washed into a canal, where the tin soldier is swallowed by a fish. When this fish is caught and cut open, the tin soldier finds himself once again on the table top before the ballerina. Inexplicably, the boy throws the tin soldier into the fire, which is most likely the work of the jack-in-the-box goblin. A wind blows the ballerina into the fire with him; she is consumed by it. The maid cleans the fireplace in the morning and finds that the soldier has melted into a little tin heart, along with the ballerina's spangle, which is now burned as black as coal.
