Tokyo is a city with few right angles anywhere. But there are many patterns of repetition.

An example of function over form is this subway entrance which takes its design from some unknown logic of underground foundations and utilities, or the imagination of an anti-Cartesian.

But all is not random. This area where the financial powers have a way to bend space to their will is filled with regularity unseen elsewhere. The Imperial powers have a way of preserving space - thus you see the wide open areas in the foreground. At one time in during the boom of the 1980’s Akira tells me that the land on which the palace sits was as valuable as the entire state of California. I think the equation has shifted since then.

very nice geometric takes and a claustrophobic staircase to the underworld

great if the city has someone to preserve open space, esp public access open space. We would need some powerful defenders and reoccupants of public open space here in Germany. Most promising would be if the city signs permits for garden towers housing cars and therefore withdraws all permits to park private cars in public space. Citizens could get back a lot of public space for green and meetup and play...

It is the juxtaposition of natural and ordered which when done right which is something which seems to me to be unique to Japan.

great sense for decoration using natural elements. The English cultivate a similar sense but exhibit a different style.
Wonderful photo, Jack

Going back in time, this is the worship hall of the Okumiya at the Toshogu Shrine at Nikko which is about 150 km north of Tokyo.
This shrine is the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of the Tokugawa era. It dates to the early 1600's.
One thing to notice here is the presence of the three lobed Tokugawa crest which is based on the futaba-aoi plant (Asarum caulescens). You see it in gold on the stands holding plates and vessels. Once you see it in one place you will see it everywhere. It is in contrast to another crest - the chrysanthemum which was the symbol of the Imperial Family. I'll point out examples of that in future posts.
