A while back I discovered, by accident that several average, low level Nikkor lenses have what seems to be the front element glued in & a paper ring that surrounds the glass. My beater, 24-85 arrived with a wrinkled ring that only needed tamping down.

I received a replacement 18-70DX, (That is stellar w/24mp) and I now know why it was referred to as "UGLY," condition. Yes, it was cheap and the glass is pretty  much flawless.

Is it best to just use a tweezers & pen knife blade to remove what cannot be repaired & do "Arts & Crafts," with black paper to make it look presentable again? (I need one of those old metal compass's I used as a kid with a #1 exacto blade.)

What kind of glue does one use?

I hope the discovery of this does not bother you as much as it did, me. Yikes.....Paper Lens Trim?

In my 35 1.8 dx lens this piece is plastic and I used double sided tape stick to glue it back   8)

removing the paper is easy, just use alcohol and wait. ::)

Does the alcohol go on the lens or is it taken internally?

Having dismantled several of the cheaper plastic kit lenses made by Nikon it is interesting to see the economies of manufacture such as the use of double sided tape to hold electronics and optics in place.

Thank you, all. I managed to remove the trim ring entirely & just used a 67mm filter for protection.

(Someone really poked & pried at the old ring before sending it to the wholesaler.) The zoom portion has a bit of excess play, however all is well.

I made my spanning tool from an old drafting compass, made in Germany. The points are sometimes too large but for most purposes, it works well.(May I bookmark your site?)
