Is it possible just to replace the female bayonet with one from and old film camera? It looks identical to one on my FM2. (I don't fancy pulling apart the FM2).
I know that I can grind the lug of the existing bayonet, but thought it might be simpler to get an old replacement part.
Anyone already done this?

I would not recommend such a procedure. The bayonets of various items (lenses, TCs, cameras) have different thickness. You might end up with a mount that prevents infinity focus or doesn't fit properly.
The grinding off approach is quick and easy and only takes a few minutes provided you have good screw drivers and a suitable metal file. Do watch out for small springs on the inside of the bayonet, though and do the mount removal so sundry items won't fly away.

Just removing the tab is very easy.
