Funny how construction often begins with distruction.
-
Indeed, Excavation, stabilisation then foundations. We were inserting 25mm rebar pins 6 metres into rock to stabilise the rock and provide an anchor for retaining wall.

a staircase and some filigran columns hold the concrete sheets in place, creating a huge free space per level like Le Corbussier originally imagined. The open space can then be reconfigured ad libitum as can the facade which has no static function. It only keeps the wind out and decorates the building.

I see this sort of construction in many parts of the world. I live in a seismic zone so we are always having to provide large amounts of lateral support (shear walls, diagonal bracing etc.) to keep those large concrete planes from collapsing like a house of cards.

We live in a seismic zone too. Earthquakes of size 6 Richter scale can be expected. I do not know how oversized the seismic security is, but size 7 or 8 should be safe with German construction regulation. I will chack that

'Construction'

A drama it is with this bridge. They could have done the work in 4 months: prefabricate the parts in a factory, tear the bridge down, assemble the parts. They opted for the 3 year option. Now we will probably see a 5 year half defunct bridge. For long periods nothing happened at all. No company wanted to place an offer for tearing down the bridge heads.... currently they have poured the concrete piers and one of two new bridge heads.

sometimes I see normal construction sites that look like a work of Christo and Jean-Claude:

a few from a few month ago
nothing of this exists anymore..

This is my site in spring 2018, when I had the old structure torn down to make place for the new structure...

Concreting a new terrace.
You can notice only the edges are armed as the concrete contains 3kg/m3 of iron needles, so no armature is needed.
I am still doubtful about this method, and the needles on the surface are getting rusted if you don't put a cover straight away., like tiling.

you can epoxy the concrete after smoothing it

More concrete. This is the last of 12 large concrete pours (around 30,000 cubic meters total). Typically a concrete pump is used to deliver the concrete where it is needed (see operator on right side of photo), but it is all manual from that point onward.

Art?

That log cabin will be very sturdy !
Interesting to see it once finished... :)
-
some houses are intentionally left to rot ... why? possibly speculation, sometimes the owners are too poor to mend them, sometimes they are part of a long legal fight between heirs. My feel is that a limit should be set to what is allowed to do to a public ressource ...

All construction in the city starts with deconstruction:

Thanks for commenting on the log cabin Frank and Francis and Robert. It is definitely not intended as art - on a private lot in the woods where others are not likely to go. - I just happened to get to it because I made a shortcut. Design is really interesting - I have not seen anything like it around here.

An effort in the typical Japanese way to make the construction site look pretty.

All construction in the city starts with deconstruction:
In the town's main street, these remains were left like that for nearly 10 years. Finally demolished the last year. :o

Thanks, Frank. It was captured with a Coolpix 3700 in those days with transition from film. I almost liked the internal paneling of the right part better compared to how it was finally covered up, but it is a great landmark building in its final state too.

Well, I don't know how the building looks now, but I too find the paneling to have eye appeal as shown in your image. It also energized my imagination, as my first impression when looking at your shot was of a misshapen ship. I quite enjoyed this photo, as is, whether or not the building was ever to be completed.
No doubt an analyst would have a field day with my remarks. ;D

Today we see the three / four new buildings at our historic central train station...

Nice one Frank! BTW... is the old parliament building still there in Bonn? I visited it in 1994 and I was quite impressed with its modern and simplistic design :)
-
there are several buildings formerly used as parliament in our town:
the Museum Alexander König, first after WW2
the torn down old parliament
the interims old Waterwork
the last Bonn parliament, the round Behnisch house

-
In 1994, you probably saw our newest parliament building, designed by Behnisch. Yes, it is still here in Bonn, now used by the WCCB, world conference centre Bonn.

construction begins with a good plan, a lot of drawings and an application for a building permit ...
this is a "green house" featuring plant cover all over its surface what makes us think hard on how to install solar panels to drive the thermal heat pump system (we want to be independent from any net when it comes to heating & cooling)

It can be both fascinating and dangerous to look up in a construction site.

Thought this will fit in two ways to the theme. "Construction" - "Deconstruction" and also lens manufacturers, this time Rodenstock. In the year 2012 the rodenstock main building was on destruction. All starts in the year 1887 at this place at Isartalstraße, and all the buildings have been gone in 2013. Rodenstock had over 130 employeers at this place back in the year 1913. A new bridge is assembled in the harbour. It is for pedestrians and cyclist.
Impressive precision from a floating crane :o
The bridge deck arrived Tuesday evening, and now Thursday all four are in place.
The bridge will open for traffic in the autumn.
This is big and heavy things for a guy doing electronics ;)

Bent, great shot of a rather nice looking crane! The bright-looking processing works well for this subject.

+1 to all the above. The crane becomes a character here, taking the center stage with aplomb. The scale makes it (him?) powerful and graceful.
-
very nice to see that infrastructure can be built intelligently and gently along the path of necessity and beauty and ingeniousity instead of along the path of corruption, incompetence and ego caring.
Thank you, Bent!
Beautiful.

Wild construction animals
-
Another construction animal is this pile drilling rig. 24" (600mm) auger on the end drills and compacts a hole which is then filled with concrete and steel reinforcing. On this project the piles are about 10M long and support nearly 60,000 KG. This is quieter and less disturbing than the traditional method of driving piles with a diesel pile driver.

I'm guessing that drilling is also faster than pile driving.

I'm guessing that drilling is also faster than pile driving.
Depends mostly of the soil coherence ! In some ground sections with natural holes (gypsum, lime, etc.), driving in a tube will allow not filling up with concrete the linked cavern... ;)
