The hush that falls in hospitals on the week ends... Still the usual rotation of the nurses, but new faces, as in the week you get to know more the team. Some slight discrepancies in the timings... And of course the big boss is missing and you have to wait again for when he will burst in and state your case in five minutes...
I truly sympathize !

John: I saw this film so many times and it did not get worse. Only slower compared to modern movies...

Today I participated in the operation of a Time Control Point on a speed stage of the National Rally Championship. Quite interesting experience, but the exceptional (by our standards) hot weather (32 C, no wind) was a mixed blessing. Fortunately my new summer dress allowed for some much need air conditioning :D I had hoped to get some action shots, but the timekeeping chores tied me down effectively. Oh well, there will be other opportunities.

Have you seen if the pins got bent ? Hope you get it fix soon, I have not used CF cards on my D800 for quite a while now, only SD
-
Armando cant really see if pins are bent, but the button of the eject seems lame i think the spring doesnt work as it should, the camera doesnt work with the cf card in any longer, wanted to take the d800 as backup going on a 10 day tour, will have to adapt then.
Thank you Armando.
-
Great shot, Fons.
A pity about the CF card reader. I only use mine as back-up and never remove it (data transfer only via cable).
With an extra SD card (and the enormous sizes now of SD cards) you should not run into problems?
-
I guess i wasnt paying attention putting the cf card back into the camera will get it fixed though once i return gut feeling tells me repair may be costly.
Have so many cf cards laying around, thanks John.

Sorry to hear Fons. I din´t even know you can put it backwards... I hope your gut feeling is wrong and the repair will be fast and cheap.

Members might have noticed I'm not as industrious a contributor as before. The reasons are of course complex, but not necessarily imply I'm tired of photography. Not at all, as a matter of fact. However, my project contract with the Norwegian ministry of Environment has been renewed and I'm busy documenting all those small and elusive plants found in our aquatic environment. Not very inspirational work, but it certainly brings in the required money.
This is the setup for high-magnification studies. Camera is the D810 and the lens in this case a Mitutoyo 5X. My old, faithful Gossen microflash died end of last years season, but I managed to locate a Novoflex fibreoptical device that by and large does the same job although with less 'flair' than my old lighting companion. Just press the Stackshot start button and let technology do the rest, I'd guess.
(for anyone interested, which probably only are a selected few, the subject is a leaf tip of Potamogeton pusillus L. 1753 em. Dandy & Taylor 1938. A very rare and endangered species in my country and high on the Red List).
-

I hope that it won't be that costly. Back in the day (2014) I opened up and replaced the CF card reader module in my D100 and the whole job took me less than an hour. The spare part cost was 24.00.
A D800 will need new rubbers that D100 didn't, but if the tech charges 1 hour of labor plus the spare part plus rubbers plus sensor cleaning, I will be amazed if the total cost is much more than EUR200. :o
Here's a pic of my D100 with the old card module out and new one waiting to go in. (I hope a link to an old pic is okay, since I don't want to pollute this June thread with old pics. Mods delete if I broke the rules and apologies).

Potamogeton pusillus, small pondweed certainly needs clean and clear water i think.
-
I'm a little envious this species is so much more common on the Continent and in the UK. Yes, it needs clean water with a high nutrient content and/or brackish water. It's so small and delicate the name should rather be "Tiny Pondweed". This specimen was just 3 cm in length.

Tom, these are elegant dogwoods. The involucres of dogwoods seen here in Tokyo opens in the way the four parts break at their tips, and thus the tips of involucres are unavoidably damaged. On the other hand, the involucres of your dogwoods don't look damaged. I wonder how they look like before they open.

I have a D200 whose CF card reader/writer has one damaged pin, so I cannot record images. Otherwise the camera seems to be fully operational.
I need a new or good S/H reader/writer module. Anyone with such a module or a dead D200? I can of course pick up S/H D200 fully working for reasonable prices so maybe that is a better option.

Birna: I am still interested to learn about any biological / ecosystem research that might inspire me or my doctors to find the cause of my illness. Currently I am draining Parasitology textbooks of their content to not exclude this possibility. Also this shot is at ISO 3200 with the V1 so it would be hard to try to recover more details let alone color
Or maybe it is not the real thing ?
Thanks for commenting

I guess they tested for Chikungunya and Dengue fever (had the latest when a kid), those can be found in southern Europe (Portugal)... As the symptoms can be the same as Malaria, with great variety depending on each individual (sometimes no rash)!
-
Chikungunya fits much better than Dengue, because joint pains are the lead symptom and Chikungunya means: "a man that walks crooked" ... exactly my feel towards life currently

There is a rather unusual ship that has been anchored off Umhlanga for the last few days, waiting to enter the harbour, I assume. It has a big wheel on top of a large tower, some kind of drilling rig perhaps, maybe someone can identify what kind of ship it is.
The shot was taken this morning, just before sunrise, the ship still had all it's lights on.

got up before dawn, had a shower took the fresh clothes my wife brought yesterday. What? No! A blue jeans? I never wear such stuff! And more: the buttonholes were torn, my underwear showed. Gosh! I went to the nurses and asked them for a sewing kit. They had sewing kits for sewing wounds! My athritic hurting hands ...
There I sat at six on Sunday morning sewing away the ugliest pair of trousers we own with wound repair kits. Absurd. But in worked! cowboy can go to church now!

Thanks Birna, it remains one of my most used cameras, and the AW 11.5-27mm has nothing be be ashamed of. In daily life it typically lives the bumpy ride in my bike pannier whenever there is room for it. The capture is a straight conversion in CNX2 without any additional adjustments other than a hair of resize sharpening.

Never expect that a nice photo target will still be there tomorrow. This charming parts car has been in my neighborhood for many years. After photographing the old truck with the wild roses a couple of days ago I eyed this one again and was just waiting for a day with better light... Today I hear a big diesel engine nearby, and notice that my photo target is about to leave. In a hurry a get off a few captures while it is starting to move up on the tow truck, just being able to get one the the wild roses in the foreground.

Some of the lakes on the current aquatic plant trip are so shallow we cannot use a boat. Hence wading is the only feasible option.Today I got stuck in a subsurface sinkhole and my Crocs disappeared while I was wrangling my exit from the treacherous trap. Fortunately they provide a colour contrast to the dominant greens all around us thus retrieving them later was not that difficult :D
-
Went looking for swallowtail kites today. No luck, we are perhaps a week or two early. They frequent the melon fields just before the melons are picked because there are lots of bugs for them to eat at that time. Today, the melons lay slowly ripening in the hot Florida sun, kiteless and forlorn, just like us.

Just returned from an aquatic plant collection trip -- now, the gruelling task of documenting all the stuff (the reason I'm not currently very active on NG).
My porch is easily converted into an air-cooled studio :D (for habitus photography). Vessels with various greenery floating in them are scattered everywhere. It's a race against time and decomposition. I'll probably lose in the end, but will do my utmost.

Went looking for ospreys yesterday. Found lots of birds, but the sky was bad, fog early, then bright overcast. I took 2300 images for practice tracking bif, but really none of them are useable as the exposure compensation required to bring out the detail in the feathers completely blew out the background. Any suggestions as to how to handle that shooting situation better? Afterwards, I checked out the melon fields I found last week to see if the swallowtail kites were congregating there, still no kites. I’ve seen isolated individuals, so I know they are in the area, but they aren’t massing over the melon fields yet. Interesting info on their migration pattern here:
