Nice step into the new month, Fons ;)
In order to renovate the roof of the central station an enormous scaffold was built. The station is a national monument. It was designed by van der Gaast (in 1965) with a free standing hyperbolic paraboloid roof which is unique in the world.

Everything is finished except for the roof. That will take a year or so... After that ProRail perhaps finds something else ;)

The bats are far more social compared to hummingbirds. I had to laugh; I never new bats would come to feed at a hummingbird feeder. I like hummingbirds but they fiercely guard a food source, mean suckers.
Dave who likes bats except those that are friends of Bela Lugosi
Wait, I've been tricked. It's a composite! :)

Composite via The Little Shop of Horrors?
Two to four bats is more social than hummingbirds. The most you'll find with hummingbirds are two, a matted pair. Even they spar over who gets to sit on the hummingbird feeder. The mate will have to sit a a meter away. They will guard the feeder when they are too stuffed to eat anymore.

This is a great photograph, and all the greater for being in black and white.

This is a great photograph, and all the greater for being in black and white.
I discovered that my favourite RAW converter for Fuji Files, Photo Ninja, has a wonderful set of black and white presets, for color presets the RAWs are not as useful and it needs a lot of work to reach the level of quality the camera JPEGs provide. I am very happy with the series, yet in this thread only one photo per day is the rule. I might start another thread, but I have a few thousand photos in the pipeline for selecting and editing, so time is limited.

My entry for 12 September. Picture & Story:
Wärmedämmverbundsystem, Energieeinsparverordnung, Passivhaus
A little German lesson today covering a new cultural phenomenon described in the words above.
So what is it all about?
Traditionally humans built houses that breathe, which means the walls let air and water in and out to a certain extent meaning there will never be too much water inside, because it can go through the walls to the outside and balance the concentration out.
Trouble is that this kind of house needs a lot of energy except you build very thick walls that insulate against heat and cold but this has gotten so expensive that most people do not do it and build thin walls.
To save energy, people had the idea to build houses that are air tight. The air and heat exchange will then be conducted through a passive or active air flow system. That means, that the hot air that is going out is heating the incoming cold air or vice a versa, depending on the time of year.
This way you save tremendous amounts of money and energy for heating and cooling both of which contribute about 1/3 to world energy consumption.
A lot of development in that technology has been done in Germany and so the German government tried to push the stuff into the market which is not a very bad idea but the way they did it means, it will in the end not save energy but waste it.
The reason for that is a technical one. The government says how much energy the house shall consume at maximum but they give no technical guidelines how to and how not to reach this kind of insulation values. So what most people do is basically to buy mountains of styrofoam and nail them directly to the walls. This might work in a new construction, a house that is from the beginning planned as air tight with a good air flow planning, active or passive.
But many companies do the same to houses that are 100 years old or 50 years old and were from the beginning constructed as air conducting, as breathing houses.
What happens then is, that the water can not get out of the house and in consequence the house gets mouldy and rots.
It is possible to insulate an old house correctly but it requires a lot of skill and precision and it is much more expensive.
Foam insulation is also a problem for the fire brigade. If you plan to insulate your house it's a good idea to not only consult an architect and someone who really knows how to manage the air flow in a construction but also the fire experts that will evaluate how your insulation will behave in case of a fire. The Kensington Torch in London, killing a lot of people should be a warning to all.
The planning and qualified execution of the plan will be very expensive compared to getting some cheapo-workers from Eastern Europe hammering styrofoam to your outer walls and cashing in on the state money.
Trouble is that the law doesn't make any distinction between the qualified and unqualified way to do it so Germany will see hundreds of thousands of houses rot and being torn down and mega tons of styrofoam having to be dumped in some way. I am looking forward to the time in roughly 10 years, 15 years 20 years when the consequences of what we do today will surface.
Now the little German lesson:
Wärmedämmverbundsystem
This is the insulating construction in its totality including the air flow planning and execution.
Energieeinsparverordnung
This is a law requiring you to save energy but not telling you in detail how to do it and how not to do it.
Passivhaus
This is a very clever idea to build a house from the beginning in the way that it saves energy in the climate it is being constructed and that it saves energy without any active airflow management, heating or cooling system. This is the most intelligent way to build a house, but it is also very expensive and only a few people know exactly how to do it. In general it is easier and cheaper to realise such a thing in huge constructions than in the small constructions.
About The Picture:
Brown is the nice house, roughly 100 years old
Ugly is the old cladding which alloweded the house to breathe giving the wooden constructon between the house and the cladding
Ugly & dangerous is the new cladding quite possible air tight & burnable....

Today I take the very low ISO tonality of the D850 (ISO 125) and combine it with the crazy drawing of the 1.4/35 Ai-S wide open.
I feel Nikon has a winner here, after the great D500 as upgrade to my D3 comes a wonderful upgrade to my D600 as well, the D850. All the good stuff is preserved in both cameras plus a lot more good stuff is added!
Only the focussing scren of the D850 leaves something to wish for. Why not a replacement from Nikon this time? The Nikon F6 screen comes to mind as used in the D500, D7XXX...

Fons, I like the photo of the man walking side by side with his dog. Other then depicting a man and a dog, this photo shows a dog which, at first glance, appears relaxed and at ease. The man walking at the dogs side will most likely be the person who cares for the dog, and who provides the confidence the dog needs to take in the world with such self confidence. Well done!
John, I really like your Sarajevo photo series. Keep them coming!
Frank, f4 IS for cowards, but sometimes it's ok to be a coward ;)
This f1,4 shot however works for me. I live by the same motto and in 90% of all photos taken I used the lens wide open.
Rob, you made very good use of the light to show off the shape of the airplane hull. I like how you used the sunstar to emphasize all this in your photo

I like how you used the sunstar to emphasize all this in your photo
thank you Buddy.

I took it this morning while Mary and I were having coffee on the deck. They were in the shade of the house and looked so pretty that I had to take a picture. D4 with the 24-120 f/4 camera jpg with no edits.

Normally I post ooc original frames here or files with the slightest amount of editing.
In this case I chose to crop & edit to my liking:
-
A photographic illustration of one* of the main reasons for me to go to The Hague for the "NG Race" there.
*Duckweeds ... a variety of species are found proliferating on the Dutch channels and waterways. I've been in Duckweed Mode for a number of weeks already

Thank you for your comment Frank
About the geometry, the resulting pano had the usual curvy edges and this time the adaptative wide angle filter in PS required zero intervention, I have not tried it since the last time I updated PS CC , I'm not positive but it seems it was fixed , another first is the use of the 35mm lens for this pano

The 300 pf + 1.4 TCE III is becoming something I want to acquire Frank. Especially when I see images like you and Fons are posting.

The insulation project in our neighbourhood part two. The house once clad in ugly shingles turned out to be a nice red stone house beneath. That has now disappeared under a thick sheet of plastic insulation. Next step will be plastering, to make the wall look like a modern house wall...

Armanado very nice.

Sexy and sensual and femenine. The strong contrast in lines (straight and curves) textures (harsh and sift), temperature, colors, gravity! All contributes to the presentation and description and adds dimension within the frame.
Odd crop choice but I dont know what to do with it so just commented.
It pulls me in

Yes, it is from the complete opposite site. (had very limited time in Mostar, and not really able to pick a location I would have liked. The disadvantage of a 'group'-travel.)

After (too) hard work a naughty flu caught me...
This is from yesterday. Artist Ans Marcus explains how she portrayed the mayor in her painting. The mayor is leaving next week. Every Mayor of Tilburg is portrayed when he leaves. A tradition since 1809 and an unique view over the two centuries. We are hoping to see the first female Mayor of Tilburg in the coming weeks.

The gentleman that owns this 1955 bought it from the original owners with his parents help in 1961 and has owned it ever since.
He had a frame off restoration done some years ago and the car is simply beautiful.
