Title: NG Crete April 2017
Post by: Bent Hjarbo on April 05, 2017, 18:24:04
The NG meeting at Crete is now started for full.
The first day out finding nice places and flowers is now nearing the end, some late food will be needed.
We had a very nice dinner last night thanks to Elias who have found a nice cosy place with good food.
The weather had its time of teasing, so Bjørn missed a shot due to clouds :(

Chania night life. Coming from a Nordic light regime, this is dark as the proverbial coal cellar by comparison. Still, the Df can get some of the ambience.

I was a bit early at the airport, yesterday, to welcome the Vikings, so I took a couple of shots with the Df and drank a cup of hot chocolate.

Lots of stuff to process from today's shooting to Omalos/Samaria and back to Chania.

I could not resists these nice specimens of Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria ssp. chrysocephalus). The subspecies chiefly is Eastern Mediterranean and has large, shiningly yellow flowers. The cloudbanks rolling over the mountain range in the background made a perfect contrast to the flowers.

I did several attempts of which the one below came out on top.

Wonderfull Bjørnesque flower in mountainus Crete.
I will sit glued to my computer and follow your adventures and photos. (Disclosure: I have a bad cold so no own camera adventures anyhow for a day or three)
When will you braid Bjørn (as Andrea suggested)?
Keep the posts and pictures coming...

Apparently through a slickly calculated in-camera double exposure.

.. and some of those inevitable mishaps. My Df and the 24 mm f/2 were in for a true beating. Having your gear hitting tiles from 1 m height is not a recommended procedure.

Anyway, next days shooting allowed for field testing to determine whether the lens and camera had survived.

The Ice plant Carpobrotus edulis, originally from South Africa, has established itself on the Mediterranean shoreline.

I think this photo give some hope as to further use of the Df + 24/2 combination on this trip.

There are four of us: myself, 'elsid', 'bent hjarbo' and 'ghjarbro'. The number might seem small but we do manage to have a lot of fun nonetheless. Same story with people as with megapixels; a few go a long way.

Crete is, like most places in Greece I have visited over the years, all about colours. Plus amazing combination of settlements and the magnificent snowcapped mountains in the background.

This is from Paleochora, on the southern coast. Nikon Df with 24/2.

Crete is a self sufficient island and exports to mainland Greece, Europe, USA and elsewhere many of the products produced here.
The most known: olives and olive oil, cheese(s), honey, barley rusks, fresh vegetables, avocados, herbs, poultry, meat (lamb, goat), to name a few that come to mind now (just had a delicious dinner with some red wine).
Chania, the Central market. All photos with the Df and the lens chipped by Bjorn yesterday, Nikkor 28/2 AI.

While Elias did boats, I did the ubiquitous Crown Chrysanthemum Glebionis coronaria. They come in various shapes and colours and grow everywhere on fallow fields and road verges.

I availed myself of the "Erik special" extension ring and put my 50/1.8 long-nose Nikkor to get some close ups of the Glebionis.

While Elias and Bjørn concentrated on details I tried to do panoramas of the harbour of Chania.
This one is made of 15 pictures taken with my 105 f2.5 AIS in order to minimise the amount of water and sky, as the the distance across the harbour is long.

This is Mythos the cat, who already had curled up on a chair at any table Elias and I selected at our favourite Old Town restaurant in Chania. Three times in a row, in fact. How he did that remains a mystery. Hence the cat's name. He had a distinct scar across the nose that immediately identified him from all  the other stray cats around.

Snapshot the old way (i.e. not looking in the finder) with the D5300 and 16/2.8 Fisheye-Nikkor.

(I know Andrea loves cats, and the cat loves to eat the power cords of her Mac)

I visited Rethymnion (Rethymnio) first time in 1982, and made the following shot of the nice beach in the Old Port at that time. Now, contrast this with 2017 to see what has become of this once pretty seaside town. Rows of studios and hotels along the shoreline, a harbour for pleasure crafts, and the signs of heavily commercialised tourism strewn all over the place.

I think the '82 setting is better, but those times are now already memories of a past long gone.

Taken with the Df (and I dare Jakov to guess which lens) this picture expresses how I feel after the Cretan experience. I had very good company (the Vikings were great), lots of fun, tasty food (those who have tasted it can understand). I have, also, learned (I hope) how to chip my MF Nikkors.

Flowers are as follows;

Borage (Borago officinalis) (with a smattering of Anthemis cf. chia)
Vinca major
Anagallis arvens (salmon pink variety,  f. azurea with intensively blue flowers apparently is the most common form)
Calendula officinalis (a cultivar)
Rosa sp. (cultivar)

That day I did the Anagallis myself, in UV. Still have a boatload of files from the visit to the Botanical Garden to process as I shot a mixture of UV and visible images that day.

Some scenes from Falassarna. I visited the place in 1981. There were only olive trees where today you see green houses.

It has been a bit busy, here in the start of the Easter, so my contribution comes a little late.
It was very pleasant to participate in this NG gathering, we got a lot of input and knowledge sharing, to keep os busy taking pictures in new ways.
#1 Is taken in Omalos
#2 Gunver got bitten with the close-up photography of the flowers, here at the Samaria Gorge starting point.
#3 The White Mountains seen from Omalos
#4 A flower where we had our coffee in Omalos, Bjørn will know the right name
#5 A bug?
#6 Structures
#7 Testing the Nikon V1 on a flower

These pictures was all taken on our first trip to the Samaria Gorge

More to follow, will try to avoid duplicates ;)

Signs of the times
But at least the lady with the smartphone didn't "cut" your feet, and maybe she is a very capable photographer.

Elsid, with the companions you had, I trust you learned a lot during this NG trip.  I will convey this as gentle as possible: you should make efforts to improve your photographic skills, especially with regard to the choice of subject, and more importantly: composition; with regard to post-production; your pictures go very often from over- to underexposed; not to talk about the colour balance and the lack of sharpness / DOF of certain pictures.

In my view, this is much more important than the choice of the "tools of the trade".   ;)

Would you believe this was Crete is my ultimate favorite.
The back drop of the snowy calm mountains with the fussy Greek foreground is just amazing.

Elsid, I have particularly enjoyed your documentation of the architecture and architectural space of Crete, especially this last shot of the house w/ green windows.

Thank you Keith, The people in Chania have made a good job of preserving the old town. Unfortunately, in some other cities,
old beautiful structures have been brought down in the name of progress.

Thank you Jakov.
The weather was ok, but on the cold side, so I guess that's the reason for the snow still to be present.

I am enjoying this colourful trip report !

Most of pictures show clearly that it's not the high season : perfect time and a clever way to go touring...I guess you guys were very spoiled with probably lower prices !  ;)

I don't think august tourists will enjoy the snow caped mountains... ;D

Very nice flowers and countryside photos.

Thanks for sharing.

Francis.

My take on Chania, night and day.
To Steki was a nice restaurant, had lunch a couple of times there, they used Mizithra cheese on the Greek salad :D

Gunver & Bent, just popping back in to say "some interesting & charming shots" from Crete now that your series are appearing.
Love the dog sleeping! And of course, as a passionate amateur botanist, it is always cool to see the flowers.

Elsid, I like your latest flowers, especially the red one. Did they have names / sign as they were in a botanical garden.

Thank you Erik for your comment. Most of them did have names. It is an ommition on my part that I did not documented the names.
Maybe because a botanist was coming along (though this is not an excuse).
Bjorn, help requested here.
