I was looking for a theme thread about shadows but couldn't find one. So I thought, why not start one? :) I'll go first with a somewhat weird dark portrait that - for some strange reason - I quite like a lot. Looking forward to your contributions!
-
Nice one Susanne.
Amongst many things, my eye keeps being drawn by the enigmatic stack of crockery in the background (full of noses, eyes and ears).
-
And thanks to serendipity, I found this

Since photography is all about shadow and light I feel the urge to contribute with a picture from this afternoon. Coming out from the store I couldnt resist this scene.

Thank you, Colin! I agree with you, somehow the background really adds something. :)
I really like your shadow action shot! Makes me wonder whether the person was running towards us or away from us? Cool capture!

Jacques, I keep wondering whether I see a strange kind of face in those shadows... :o
Well, I definitely see a face in this one (at least parts of it):
-
This last one is SO my kind of thing. nice.
-
Thank you Elsa! You must have tons of very nice very shadowy shots!
-
I have one :)
One of my very very first ones, also about 10 years ago
-
Oooooh, nice!! That is a very cool picture, Elsa!
-
Thank you Susanne :)

Beautiful examples and a nice theme.
Winter, low sun, longer shadows. Nice for a walk...
-
Very true, John, now's the time for long shadows.
But short shadows can also be interesting! :)

I am enjoying it a lot :)
A repeat from Florence!

Wow, so many wonderful contributions! I like them all, particularly the composition of Jacques' Table and the Italian shadow selfie! I hope there's more to come. :) Oh, how glad I am I opened this thread! :)

Very intriguing forests. Jacques "forest" seem quite strict, but none the less very good :)

Wow! Thats quite a challenge to construct and build. What is it going to be?
-
Borge,
It is the inside of a new building for our product teams. It is a bit of a challenge, but it has been very interesting. We are going to move a couple of thousand people in this Autumn. The idea behind the design is that most of the active parts of the building are in the middle (you can see a multi-faceted heart towards the left) and that desks and workstations are around the outside. We hope this promotes people interacting with each other often, but not when they want to be working quietly. If you want coffee or need to use the bathroom you will have to go to the middle.
I'm sure to be posting more of the building as we go along.
-
Looking forward to see the construction moving on :)
-

Frank, it actually was shot in July...but it is bright and sunny today in October.
I often envy the Europeans with their wide range of daylight qualities, except maybe the long days of mostly cloudy winter. Sunlight diffused by clouds is relatively rare and usually lasts a short time here. When it occurs, I'll run outside with a camera and look for something to photograph.

I´m paying attention at how our everyday light can influence the way we shoot. Here is somehow easier to keep track, beyond personal style or preferences. This harsh shadows are present most of the time in my life.
The dry air and the lower incident angle of sunlight (compared to that in Japan) should make the shadows and the light interesting.
I wonder if the coloration of the light reflected from the asphalt ground in the first image were caused by the color of the wind shield of the car as well as the LoCA of the lens? The effect looks interesting and works nicely in the image.
-
My guess is window tint plus low angle sun-rays too, going straight into the lens, that will make for a killer enough combination :D. This picture was taken in La Línea de la Concepción so the air is actually very humid, like an island.

Natural "design" meets man-made forms...natural dominates...a feeling of well-being is instilled in the observer.

I have been inspired by the american painter Edward Hopper regarding shadows and the light. The photograph shown is one of many taken in an effort to create some hundred images based on my inspiration from his paintings. To me this is a continuing process in my daily living environment. Maybe a book in the future...? Nikon Df, AF-I Nikkor 300mm 2.8, aperture 16, Nikon polarizer and a tripod.

That is a very interesting image, IMO.

You've had a rich & productive September Akira.
The second one on 4th Sept intruiges me (trying to work out whether there are handrails in the centre of the steps, and how the illumination there works...)

LOL, Colin. There are indeed handrails. I just tried to nail the shooting position so that the bars would be perfectly aligned and become invisible. It looks as if there are just the lights and the shadows: natural visual trick. :) If I remember correctly, the illumination lamps are embedded in the floor.

You were completely successful Akira!
For me, this was one of those visual puzzles where my brain wouldn't accept what my eyes were showing it.
(My brain does need to get out more though ;) )

Akira, never too late to comment on such a comment! To me that is very encouraging and I can only say the same about you - many thanks. So, what you see in my pictures might simply be me inspired by you ;)
A shot from "Pine shadowland" into the light. I always enjoy this view in the spring with the instense light in a dense Pine forest.

Colin, no worries! At the end of the day, everything is nothing but shadows and light. :D

+1 You found the words ;)

:) ;)
Yet I can not find them for Akira´s color isolation image. Very strong symbols, great catch. Facade and power lines in juxtaposition...yet I´m just describing. It is difficult to point out the obvious appealing.
Love the shot Akira. Print it! :)

Paco, suppose that you are talking about Anthony's image, I would fully agree! Wonderful capture, Anthony!

Thanks Akira! - glad you like it. It is a light installation projected on an old tree in a park area where I live - a yearly light festival originating from an old celebration of light when half the winter has passed - "Missa Candelarum" as far as I remember.

Thank you, Lars, for the details. The festival shows how the northern people have cherished the sunlight.

Hello Akira... Hmm, given that it has more shade than shadow perhaps it should have gone in the Trains 'n' Boats thread...or perhaps the Self Portrait one, that's me between the carriages :)

Thank you, Jakov, Paco and Dogman!
These were shot in a residential area and that on Sunday. The street was not at all busy. I enjoyed the calmness.
The colors were not rich enough, so I decided to go for B&W which is essentially more appropriate for these kinds of motifs. :)

My mistake! It must have late at night or early in the AM. It was Dogman's "Tower" that I incorrectly thought was part of your series of dark shots.
Nice shot, Dogman!

Thank you, pluton. I wish all my shots were good enough to be mistaken for Akira's. :)

An interesting light designed to leak lights from six tiny holes at the corners of the hexagonal cover. The holes look like just simple ones, but the light leaking from them is dispersed into the rainbow colors.
