And here in Michigan, where the state was ground flat by glaciers millennia ago, the winds do blow. When I get up in the early light, I don’t just check for the temperature and degree of cloudiness, most of all I check to see if there is wind, and how much. If it says “Calm,” I have to get my gear and go out.
Taking one photo, perhaps you can dodge the wind or wait it out, but taking 50 or 100 out in the field, well, wind prevents that from working out very well.
And even when the weather says calm, often there is still some light wind. This little device called the “Flowerpod,” created by nature photographer Les Saucier, has been invaluable for my work.

Those of you who have to live with wind might do well to look into such a device. Les Saucier used to sell a tiny tripod (see photos) with the flower holder on the top, held there by magnets. Now he just sells the articulated flower holder, which can (fairly easily) be adapted to the mini tripod of your choice. The one shown here folds down to about 10 inches, and extends to something like 4 feet, on top of which the flower-holder snaps on, held by magnets.
Sorry, these snapshots were taken with the wrong lens, so just consider the info, not the photo. This solution to holding a single flower (or whatever) steady has been a great help.
