Let me share my thoughts on this glass which is new for me. So some images with crops, hand-held. Full info at Flickr. Thank you! This only the image I used Viv ser 1 TC 1.4. TC was not fully readable by camera, but Flickr info is 550mm, at least. Crop from extreme upper left corner, about 800%. The image could be sharpened (and PS!) to desire level, but is fully usable even now, with its lower, so far, color/contrast ratio, of course.

Your examples indicate this zoom lens is a versatile tool, and capable of delivering quality results in the near range and also towards the horizon. Atmospheric influence will of course degrade distant scenery by air turbulence and lowering of contrast, thus there is a limit to what can be extracted from far away subjects. Shooting during night, in cold weather, or very early in the morning, are ways of abating the degradation caused by distance alone, but there are limits to what can be achieved of course.
I was positively surprised of the near-range scenes. Apparently the ability to concentrate the field of view in combination with high-contrast optics lead to punchy manifestations of the chosen scene.

Agreed, absolutely! As far as I am concerning of max file resolution delivering by given lens, I would say, this one is most versatile and bested anything I have had before. Yet, I think, its IQ is equal to the best primes inside its range, in departments of sheer resolution and color/contrast ratio. Practical absence of any kind of CA and geometrical distortions are profoundly speaking of themselves. Thank you, Bjorn!

"...bested everything..." I am sorry!

The 80-400 vr D and the 80-400 VR G afs have been my favourite Nature walkabout lenses for quite a few years. I've used them on all bodies starting with the D200 and even used the Kenko TC1.4 on the older lens. I've not really spent much time with the Nikon TC1.4 II on the new lens. The 150-600mm lenses and the new 200-500mm do not really appeal because I do not want to give up the 80mm FL. I tried to buy a Sig 50-500 at one point (good deal) but missed it.
Your800 seems to get along with the lens very well :) > My D3S loves the new lens but the D7100 has some fine tune problems >:(
This is with the D700, 80-400D with TC.4 handheld at 120mm (Kenko did not show EXIF) Frame filler above me :)
The Butterfly is with the D610 at min. focus distance hand held. No birds around so shooting bugs again ;)

The last crop from the other image - I was not able to keep the combo in absolute parallel to the object, even f11.0 giving me less than 2mm of DOF. Especially hand held. F16.0 is visibly destroying image due to diffraction. VR and AF were absolutely necessary, I can't imagine how to keep the combo steady without ones. Thank you for your attention! LZ
-
Impressive close-up qualities from this obviously versatile zoom lens. Well done examples.
As to keeping the lens steady, there are efficient solutions apart from VR ... No potential optical downsides either: tripod and good head. For a lens such as this, a fluid head probably is optimal.

. Correct! But my goal is to show what to do in case of emergency, even with acceptation of some lowering of its phenomenal resolution. Thank you! LZ

LZ, I really like the first image with the LYK ship. I would have probably gotten rid of the two rocks bottom right and just left the stark negative space. Still constant rain but at least not as much flooding a some parts of India. Nice thing about living on a hilltop ;)

LZ, your photos are persuasive evidence that good picture quality can be obtained with this lens. Are the shots you've shown shot from tripod, handheld using VR, or both?

I also love the image of lifeguards with the crude oil carrier in the background: a very nice color composition.

LZ, your photos are persuasive evidence that good picture quality can be obtained with this lens. Are the shots you've shown shot from tripod, handheld using VR, or both?
. Since VR was implemented, have never used tripod outside. Handheld VR ONLY, with supporting for elbows, as the night image of Manhattan at 1/8, as VR in this lens is a blessing! On speeds range of 60-180, VR is on "Active" position, to avoid VR-shutter-mirror wrong mechanical vibration, caused by engineering mistake of D800-810 mirror boxes. At this position, the lens is fantastically sharp, no double lines at all. So I left the "Active" VR at any speed, it nicely working for me. Thank you! LZ

Hi, Tom! In my experience, D500, while really nice, is not resolving enough for such the sensor "killer" 80-400 G lens. The lens is outresolving this 20MP sensor easily, as well as D800-810 sensors. As for today, the D7200 is more sufficient for 80-400 G lens. Of course, the low-resolving D7100 sensor is eating alive by so demanding and extra-high resolving 80-400 lens. Please notice it is my own opinion, your way may vary! Thank you for your comment! LZ

LZ, I am buying he D500 primarily for fast birds and soccer. I have many favourite images with the D300/D300s/D700 and D3s. I seriously thought about the D7200 , half the price, but this will very likely be my last Dx camera, I still get a kick from shooting the D300/300s and D700.
It is more important for me to get a good image than high resolution. People have printed frame filling life size sports images of mine from the 12/13 MP sensors as posters.
Dx camera. Funny, the D610 handled the TC2III very well with the 300 2.8vr, not the D7100. I've just never really bonded with it. I am hoping for a fast 20-24MP FX. D750 is a great camera. Maybe Nikon will introduce a D760 with increased FPS, better AF and buffer. I very rarely shoot long bursts any mor but the speed of a 3 or 4 shot burst is important as well as a big buffer. I often shoot many short burst with almost no time gap. That is the nature of an exciting soccer match :) Boring matches mean shooting the fans, Official or birds :)

I have made good experiences with the D500 and the 80-400G for travelling and hiking and still have bird animals and action-photography capability. Havent seen any need for higher pixel density so far, teh D500s densitiy ist higher than those of the D8xx series anyway, would run into more noise troubles probably. I dont see the more pixels of the D7200 too advantageous, AF performance (speed and accuracy) cache size and high fps of the D500 are considerably more important factors to me.
-
Thanks God, all of us have our own way in photography, Ladies and Gentlemen! As more we share our experience, as much we gained! As for my style, speed and buffer are not that important, but quality and quantity of the pixels and their density is extremely important for me! It is very interesting to read your comments, Gentlemen! THX! LZ

You certainly get excellent results with this lens.
Curiously the AFS 80-400VRII does not measure up so well compared to primes or the Canon 100-400 at LensRentals. Their tests are among the best and most reliable - they measure multiple copies so you can't say they cherry picked a good copy, or have a bad sample. See: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/08/the-sort-of-great-400mm-shootout/
"Commonly called the 80-400 VR II, this lens has been the Nikon 400mm zoom for some time now. It’s, well, it’s better up to about 300mm, but it’s just not that good when you stretch it out to 400mm. Not a great performance for a lens that demands a premium price."
-
True, indeed! Some tests doesn't cost the paper it was written on - I mean 80-400G or 28-300 Nikkors. People, sometimes, do want look more knowledgeable than they really are! Nobody never ever can make any conclusion based on one only copy of anything - lens, car, wife/husband - you name it, hah-hah! That's why I am staying - do speak about your own copy, never make bold statement about anything. The 80-400G lens is fantastically good thru the range, especially at 400mm, as you can see. The main reason, even respectful tester can make wrong conclusion on this lens, is lack of time - they can't perform the FT as precise as it must be. This operation on 80-400G lens requires a lot of time and efforts. Mistake of 1-2 units could lead you to a tunnel effect at 400mm - so-so sharp center and progressively softer sides. Do not make rush, guys, with this lens! Thank you for your comment! LZ

Longzoom, In your experience with the
AFS 100-400 AF-S 80-400 G how do you rate the general sharpness performance at 100mm vs. 200 vs. 300 vs. 400mm? Many such zoom lenses 'poop out' at the long end.
Did you need to examine many copies before getting a good one?
-
Hi, Keith! I believe you really mean 80-400 AFS G lens. I can admit its equal sharpness thru the zoom, from 80 to 400mm, even wide open, with some climb of sharpness to the long end, contrary to the "popular" testers. To be exact, I was waiting for price drop, and got this lens from E-Bay, on my own risk, as I thought. To my surprise, this one appears to be the sharpest long zoom I've ever had, especially at the long end. Did take a look at my copy, my friends got 5 of them, which were almost equal on the field. There are a lot of images with crops taken by me at the whole zoom range, so click on any pic or crop inside this topic, and EXIF from Flickr will tell you everything. But one more very important thing - take it into your account, please - this lens requires extremely precise Fine tune, at the long end. Even smallest mistake will make you think your copy is not up to your expectations. THX! LZ

I wish I had that lens for my D7200!
Honestly say, this lens will be very nose-heavy on D7200, even with grip, as well as on any DX body, even on D500. Perfect balance for the 80-400G lens is reaching on the D3-D5 cameras, in case of my D810 the balance is better with 8 rechargeable batteries inside the grip, plus its own one inside the body. THX! You convinced me of the punch of this lens–camera combination. I have now bought the 80-400 for my D800E to use on a South Africa trip later this fall. Looking forward to it.

I wish you the biggest luck ever possible! Do me a big favor, post the images, after all! But before, be sure your combo is absolutely precise FTuned, at 400mm! This combo will not tolerate mistake even of +/- 1 unit, in FT! Luck, again! THX! LZ

Thank you Longzoom,
I think it is pretty spot on. Included is as model a horse instead of an antelope. I have to practice at animals at hand :) .
Preferred crop, proof of sharpness and whole original picture attached. No tripod.

It's really spot-on, Eric, indeed! I took it into my consideration, after long experience with this miracle lens, that under situation where temperature and Sun radiation varies very significantly, FT could vary as well, to +/- 2 FT units. Every combo acting like this, but the 80-400G lens is absolutely unforgivable on this regard. Beautiful horse image, BTW! LZ

I hope to gather enough experience with this combination till we experience the Kruger park and other together. Thank you for advice.

Clearly technical image to check the FT, 2 crops. At 400mm, with its excessive resolving power, this lens outresolving 36 MP sensor. It easily outresolving even Canon's 50 MP sensor, and still is equal to any long tele, or even better, inside its price group, of course. Please pay attention: on the crop, above the pink door, there is a rounded white connector. You are able to see bolts on it. To say this zoom cannot be equal to the prime, especially if prime is with any TC, is an ERR TO REALITY ( To return the favor!). THX! LZ

Doubled. Sorry.

-
Sharpness is impressive.
-
Yes, it is really impressive lens, Gentlemen, thank you! But there is not the highest resolving power only - color, contrast/microcontrast, distribution of light, luck of coma, practical absence of most geometrical distortions, very reliable stability - to name only few, but not all, positives sides. But there are some sides one has to be very caution about - shocks from the front, as well as from sides! It is not , definitely, the lens to travel over the bike with! And watch the outside temperature difference - the FT may differ +/- 2 units, what is unacceptable absolutely, so, check it, time-to-time. Yes, it looks like Nikon put the best glass and a lot of engineering efforts to create such the successful lens, out of questions! Let us see, what a new 180-400 will bring, and, while it is not for me - weight and price - a lot of colleagues are waiting for it! Thank you! LZ

Thank you so much, Gentlemen! LZ (BTW, if somebody interesting, E-Mail me. THX!)

LZ, very sad to hear. Hey, you won't be longzoom with out the 80-400 ;) . I started shedding the heavier lenses some time back but the afs 80-400 belongs to my son so it is still around but I do not get close to your images
All the best with your health issues.
Cheers,
Tom

This lens, contrary to 28-300, at 400mm, being wide open, still outresolving even 46MP Z7's sensor. The pic and crop. Upper image at 370mm, 5.6, crop. Next one at 400mm, 5.6, crop. In my experience, such the resolution is possible on mirrorless body Z7 only, today, if hand held, of course. On tripod, with MUP, it could be reachable, for D850, but needs further research. THX! LZ
