Weather conditions change very rapidly, alternating rain with sunshine which to me is perfect.

As mentioned weather changes quickly with rain alternating with sun every few minutes or so, this comes with some amazing opportunities like an in camera 2EV overexposed backlit shimmery wet road posted in the opening post or this rainbow mountain shot in pretty much the same place.

Today the weather is overcast so theres less interesting light to play with, we coped by doing a lens chipping day  :)

In order to check all the mandatory boxes of used image styles; this psychedelic image checks the maximum pushing of the contrast, saturation, etc  ;D  :o

Erik,

The photos of the Standing Stones with the fish eye lens are really spectacular! I appreciate the work that you put into the mechanism to hold the thing.  When you use the vertical mount how do you ensure that you get the framing and focus correct, since there is no way to use the optical view finder of the lcd on the back of the camera.  Are you hooked up to something like an iPad or other computer?

Thanks,

Lowell

On the Butt of Lewis we encountered a Grey Seal, he came up for air every few minutes.

I first spotted this weird triangle, really had to look whether it was a rock or something else but when it disappeared I knew I had to pay attention :)

This is him when I spotted him a second time

Thank you Jakov! Wonderful organ and church shots.

Sitting on the airport. Two tripod heads in my
luggage. Just lost my Linhof legs. They wanted to have additional
75€  for the tripod legs transport per direction. I sent them back
to Bonn with
my wife and kids. Either I find some local to lend me tripod legs
or I will buy another tripod in Scotland.
Next time I buy a tripod that fits into my luggage.....

My normal work is always with  a car.
I try to avoid going by plane.

Today will  be the BIG chipping service event. Erik & I have completed 5 lenses by now and more are queued up to await their destiny ....

Currently the 90 mm f/3.5 Voigtländer SL.1 of Rosko is in the works.

Unfortunately, my recurrent leg infections flared up badly, so I have to leave the NG Event and Scotland tomorrow morning to go to a Norwegian hospital for admission. Collateral damage from a traffic accident in 1998 when I was run over by a bus. Seeing all the enjoyment and creativity on display here in Killin makes me sure my absence will hardly be noticed, though.

It's lighter. I didn't use an extension ring, I could get in rather close. There is more depth of field. I like it a lot!
So if you get a chance to get the 68/1.25, don't hesitate, all the aberration qualities are there!  ::)

Akira. The fast photo team with the Italian driver has of course
taken responsibility! While I was working a church with very small
organ, the others errected a Mercury observatory outside.

We had a trunk full of equipment and picked the top shelve
items for the purpose.

We just had roughly ten other photographic challenges on a long
day starting at 8 a.m. when the others were still asleep and came
back at Mindnight. Then we started drinking.

At four in the morning we went to bed. Supershooting!!!

The sloppy lens hood is a give-away for the 200/4 Micro AI/AIS ...

Departing Killin in a short while, unfortunately. Amongst other things I probably managed to be the first NG Member to be bitten by a tick indoors ... The event up to now has been a huge success and my departing will not detract from that, I surmise. I'm always positively surprised by the strong feeling of community and friendship that develops within these events and the Scottish meet-up was no exception to this general rule. Thanks and gratitude goes to Dave for his efforts to arrange all the meeting details and assist the members flocking to his home country. Well done, Dave.

Akira, yes, it was the 24-70/2.8G AFS, old version, which is getting a little creaky. I'm becoming tempted to replace it with the new version after seeing it used here.

|Just got back home from the trip - sad I had to go early.
Never managed to get internet going while there so there is a slight log of images to come.
Starting from the first full day together - Sunday.
This is from the hike, after Gunther, Francis and Frank dropped out.
3 stalwarts continue, this is Simone the Younger getting almost blown off Ben Lawers ("Blowing in the wind")

My take on the Mercury transit.
Fuji X-T1, Mamyia 500/5.6 and 2X TC, Baader Astro Solar
I wonder what the image could looked like if the lens actually focused to infinity and if I did not have to stop down to f/32...

Today Erik et moi dropped Bjørn at the airport a little past 10am and we used the time in between flights to have brunch and spend some quality time at The Kelpies before I had to climb on board of a blue metal bird myself.

The industrial strength antibiotics are starting to have a positive impact, so the occasional RAW file can be processed.

The Scottish landscape as seen from Loch Tulla Viewpoint, captured in IR with my Nikon D5300 (internal 720 filter) and Andrea's little 18-105/3.5-4.5 Zoom Nikkor. Despite the crappy plastic mount on the lens it apparently works fine also for IR.

Special thanks goes to Dave for organising our get together and taking us to places we would not have seen was it not for his generous willingness to put up with us.
Thanks goes to the Crew for choosing to go to Scotland and being there for all of us :)
Then I would like to express my gratitude to all the old and new friends for being so nice to me (especially Bez) and I hope that our friendships will evolve even further.

Since we didn't have WiFi as we are accustomed to, I didn't post as much as I would normally do but I will eventually populate this thread with my images and I encourage everybody else to do the same.

Let me not forget Frank's dinner that got us all around the table to experience his excellent culinary skills.

Best, Jakov

It was indeed and great week with un-Scottish weather. I think most of us got a sunburn.

Dave, again thanks for organizing and bringing us to so many beautiful places.

Today Frank, Francis and I went to the Isle of May for some burning.
Although the Puffins stayed far away we could get som nice pictures.
It was my first real test with the D500, but man that camera is made for birders (and probably sport shooters too).
Even with my Tamron 150-600 focus and tracking were instant and I got much more keepers than with my D810

Our boat took a hit when setting us at May and we needed help from a rescue boat to leave the Island and get to the mainland.

More fisheye (Sigma 8/3.5) in the woods.
Not as dramatic as Erik's 6mm, but much easier to handle. :)

And the second one is how it's done. :)

Erik and Chris,

There many photographs here which are really wonderful.  I must admit however, that the Fisheye images are truly stunning.  You gentlemen, really know how to use these lenses.

Chris,  What is the angle of view of the Sigma lens?  I assume that one could NOT use the Nikon lens as shown with you lying on the ground since it is a 220 degree lens.  In the mountains behind our home, there are some wonderful stands of tall, perfectly white Aspen trees which have a brilliant orange-yellow foliage in the fall.  I tried you approach with my 14-24 Nikkor but it didn't come our like yours.

Thanks to everyone for posting these really wonderful images.  I really like the shots, of Erik taking the Kayak pictures at Glencoe and then the resulting photos which he took.  Nice to see what is happening.

this is good viewing and reading.

The harvest from this week is looking good.
Let me start with a few impressions from the Highlands. As Simone Tomasi already recounted, we did an extensive hike last Sunday. It was really great to have the light and excellent 300 PF with me to shoot some detailed shots of distant things.
The last one is a three-shot pano of soft grass and moss against the background hills.

more pictures from Ben Lawers:

Internet access proved to be quite challenging. So here are the omitted pictures of last Sunday during our hiking tour to Ben Lawers.

The persons depicted are:
- Frank testing how far reaching his new D500 is.
- Simone waiting for me to set down my camera.
- Rosko aka Francis documenting plant life on Ben Lawers.

P.S. I'd also like to apologize for the quality of these shots. It's a bad idea to re-assign card slots just before such an intense week of photography. Unfortunately I could just save the jpeg files of the first two days... :(

Testing the 'new' Fuji S5Pro (converted to broad-spectrum by Kolari vision and brought to me by Andrea), here in combination with the UV-Nikkor for false-colour landscapes. It was very windy and my eyes started immediately to run thus focusing was next to impossible. I just pushed the shutter release and hoped for the best. Not sure that actually manifested itself though.

Hi Lowell,

It's the Sigma 8/3.5 a relative cheap option. It has a 180 degree angle. The lens is still sold new in Holland, I got mine second hand for a nice price.

The Kelpies - Inspired by Jakov and Jan Ann

I kept the distinctive blue circle at the edge of the image, it is formed by the lens itself i.e. the optical design of the circular Nikon Nikkor Fisheye lenses such as the 8mm and here the 6mm f/2.8.

I've prepped some jpegs but I don't know if I dare show them, with everyone posting such amazing work. Scotland certainly seems to have got the creative juices flowing, and my "standard landscapes" begin to look a little tired.

I will post them, if only because there will be some information (correct names for example) which may be useful.

  1. At the lodges. The woods right beside our 3 lodges.
  2. Beinn na Chruilaste - where Glen Coe and Glen Etive meet.
  3. Bluebell, Cuildochart Forest - where a number of us went on Wednesday morning.
  4. Coiletir Cottage - beneath the large mountain at the bottom of Glen Etive.
  5. Glen Ogle Forest - where some of us went on dull, cold Friday morning.
  6. Falls on the River Coupal - we stopped here twice and parked in trees beside a bridge,
  7. River Coupal (2) - shot in the last moments of sunshine from that bridge.
  8. Canoist - River Etive
  9. River Etive (2) - near where it meets the waters of the fjord.
10. Storm damage - Glen Etive.

I'm probably the last to arrive at home, but I'm there. No delays this time with the ferry.
On my way from Anstruthers to Newcastle I took a scenery route as I had enough time.
I didn't expect these kind of obstacles though!  :o

Finally, after a series of technological (and nervous  :)) breakdowns, I am able to join you! First of all, I would like to thank Dave and his lovely wife for welcoming us and for organising such an amazing event. A big thank you goes to all the participants - you are such a wonderful bunch of people and it was my pleasure to be with you all and learn what good photography is. Last, but certainly not least, a big thanks goes to my dear friend Jakov for inviting me one more time to join this community. Six years have passed and I remembered how great time I had with some of you in Norway. I hope to see you all soon and to meet other members as well. For those who don’t know me, I am from Serbia but I live in Holland for a long time. I enjoy photography and even though I got side-tracked a bit, I hope that I will continue and become better in this very inspiring art. Here are some of my views on bonnie Scotland!

Thank you, Aleksandra, for being so kind (and I'm sorry for mis-spelling your name earlier). I so much enjoyed meeting you and Jakov and all the other participants that there is no need for thanks; Mayumi and I enjoyed every moment. As you say, the group was made up of marvellous individuals - there was no rivalry, no jealousy, no bad temper, no rudeness, no selfishness (or, at least, none that I was aware of  ::) ) - it's a kind of miracle.

It was wonderful for me to meet old friends from Lofoten and before, and to make new friends. As I said at Frank's dinner-party, these get-togethers are about photography and making good images - of course - but what they are really about is friendship. I feel that I have made new friendships that will last the rest of my life; even if we rarely meet, or never, we will remain friends.

My deep thanks to everyone who came to Scotland 2016. You gave me memories that I will often return to.

Nice shot, but you are very harsh with me.
I just wanted to be where our very informed host suggested we should go and time was running out.
Next time you are free to make your own arrangements and drive a car by yourself  ;)
The same goes for the train. If anything you should be glad because it forced us to be out on location by a certain time, which prevented us from wasting time.

This shot turned out very well! There are probably enough pretty shots of the castle at sunset already on the internet, but I doubt that I could find another one like yours.
Sometimes I enjoy giving up control/planning to find things I would not seek out myself. In the case of the day trip with Simone, it turned out to be very worthwhile, everything we saw was worth seeing and even though we missed the sunset at the castle by a few minutes, we had great fun shooting the blue hour.

In retrospect we should perhaps have spent some time at the "wrong" location first.
In the future I'll try to be more open to serendipity and the unexpected.
Having a plan is a good thing but it can be a limit when one sticks to it too rigidly as I tend to do.
I am aware of this and am trying to work on it, not always successfully.

1. Backlit rowan-tree, Glen Etive.

5. Buachaille Etive Mor ("The Great Shepherd of Etive"), Glen Coe.
6. Trees at the head of Loch Tay.
7. Larch needles in woodland beside our lodges.
8. Tree, isolated by soil erosion, River Lochay.
9. Rock pool, top end of Glen Etive.
10. Stob Dubh - a Glen Coe mountain, seen from Glen Etive.

That was the week that was.

Interesting trip back home to the US from Edinburgh...

Because President Obama was speaking at the Rutgers University commencement in my home state of New Jersey, we were warned at the beginning of the 7.5 hour flight that we might be delayed in landing because the Presidential jet, Air Force One, would be using Newark International Airport thus causing all operations at all three terminals of this huge airport to totally shut down while AF One was active. Our pilot announced over the loudpeaker, "Don't worry folks we will have enough fuel for hours of delay" -- thus causing everyone on the plane to groan in unison.

Fortunately, however, the Edinburgh tower was able to slot us in for an earlier departure, we were granted a higher altitude flight path and the Newark tower was able to land us before airport chaos broke loose due to Presidential motorcades.

I recall attempting to explain at some point to some of my European companions, that our US President does not have as much power as is generally thought. I should have added "except when traveling by air".  ::) ;D :P

*****

I enjoyed the Scotland Meet-up tremendously. It was wonderful to meet NG members and get to know them a bit more than is possible online. Scotland itself was delightful, interesting, friendly and beautiful. The Scottish people were ever helpful and friendly to us. I hope everyone had as good a time as I did.  ;D

Amazingly I did not gain any weight from all those steak & ale pies, beef burgers and Scottish shortbread cookies which I consumed!! Nor from Frank's delicious banquet.

*****

Dave, thank you heaps & heaps for arranging the lodging, the groceries, the informative packets and the most excellent excursions to the forests and glens. We will have a lifetime of memories and photos to recall these happy days we all shared. Best regards to Mayumi for her friendly & cheerful assistance. And a pat on the head to sweet Sally.

Since Dave has already mentioned the bluebells, I will spend a word in favour of the beautiful light making patterns on the underwater rocks.

Simone, you are most kind! Thank you for your kind words! Although I consider all of my shots to be "normal" I know exactly what you mean :)
It's just that having Bjørn around all the time in the back of my mind makes me rock the boat or push the envelope a bit further than "normal" :)
I am sorry I didn't get to experience driving around with you. I for one would not have minded a bit of speed around the slopes of Scotland.

Now back to normality.

Dave took us to a lovely place on Friday morning. In the woods next to a lake but I am so bad with names and places that I have no idea where exactly, I apologise for that.
Martin and Aleksandra taking photos.

Jakov - I like the trees picture very much. You shot it in Glen Ogle Forest and the lake nearby was "Lochan na Bealach" (it doesn't really have an English name, but a translation would be "The small lake at the pass").

It might be helpful to have a list of the places we went to, around Killin.

The ruined medieval castle in the woods near Loch Tay is Finlarig Castle.
The island in the river, reached by a gate with a padlock (burial place of Macnab clan chiefs) is "Innis Bhuidhe", trans. - Yellow Island
A group went with me to woods on the far side of Loch Tay (on the Wednesday morning). That area is called Cuildochart Forest.
Several of us went to Loch Tulla, Rannoch Moor, and Glen Etive on Thursday. In Glen Etive we first parked in trees near a bridge over the River Coupal, and later we photographed the canoists at the waterfall. That river was the River Etive.
On Friday afternoon we went back to Glen Etive but first we briefly visited the start of Glen Coe. We parked in a rough area beside the road and near a large rock mountain - stopping just for 10 minutes or so - then went back a little and drove to the turn into Glen Etive, then a long way down that road. The "bicycle-shed", the yellow flowering bushes, the quiet river flowing towards the end of a fjord, and the small distant cottage beneath a large dark mountain, these were all in Glen Etive.

I hope this is helpful.

Where did I get the fame of speeding?!
My driving is totally relaxed, it's just that when I drive the distance from the arbitrary points A and B become shorter.  ;D
Next time we can try to do a bit more of driving and shooting together.

Castle Urquart is a big distance for a return trip from Killin. Now I am even more grateful for the lift you gave to Bez, Simone and me.

I finally got back to Tokyo today after a few days of recuperation in London, feasting on antibiotics and antihistamines. I hasten to add that the need for antibiotics was NOT food based.

Such wonderful and diverse images here - a fascinating range of perspectives on the scenery of Killin and its environs.

Many thanks to Dave for the effort he put into organising the event and the weather, and then keeping on eye on things each day. He was a brave man to take on the project.

Here are some images from my (unfortunately) limited time in and around Killin - such a beautiful place.

1) The Falls of Dochart from under the bridge
2) Beautiful tree near the Finlarig Castle ruins
3) A take on the ruin of Finlarig Castle
4) From a walk in the Cuildochart Forest on Loch Tay
5+6) Early morning shots at the head of the loch on Friday - I didn't actually get to see the sun, despite getting there at 4.30.  :(

Here is a pano of An Stuc, seen looking west while ascending the last Munro of the day, Meall Garbh. To the left, higher, is Ben Lawers.
Colour and B&W versions (I made three B&W conversions, with Color Efex, DxO Film Pack 3 and Lightzone; the last is my pick).

Erik. What I could not write before because of no internet in a certain Northern European country:
I love your shots on the bridge esp. The rusty one, my favorite. Although I never contemplated to
do fisheye myself I love to look at these images. I know the perspective from hundreds of 180°x360°.

That said I see what a big fish is really made for: action. The canoo shot is just what these things are
made for or any RedBull event. Pity you have to give this great tool back that was so well suited for your way
of seeing things.

PS. I am not sure if I wrote about my adoration for the composite with Mercury and Jurte? I love it.

That is a very brave image which works really well and is the best I've seen yet of the castle. I think most people, including myself, would have been afraid of all that acreage of black, and would have cropped a lot of it.
Thanks, David, I don't feel brave, just lucky to be there at the right time.

Unfortunately I could not manage to do that too...

Total agreement about the tryptych; but not about the name of the river at that bridge. The river which the road crosses at that bridge is the Coupal. About 100m to the east of the bridge, the Coupal merges with the Allt Chaillach to form the River Etive. Sorry to seem pedantic, but anyone who needs accurate captioning and/or keywording would have been misled.

Great pano Frank, IMHO the first rendering in this post (#470; semi monotone) works best. In the others i feel you took the tone mapping too far. Of course, just my opinion, YMMV.

Excellent triptych!
Thank you. The idea for this presentation (instead of the contiguous panorama) came from an exhibition where a photographer presented his square format medium format images in this way (without stitching). Since we don't have square sensors, stitching seems like the most natural way to achieve this, although you could also shoot images, crop them to a square and set them side by side.

Indeed, river Coupal (or Coupall). In post #298 the same river is visible. For me, this is easily the best location we've been to, I could spend hours upon hours at that stream with all the colorful rocks.

I can see what you mean. The first one is quite simple and works best for me too, but YMMV as you say.

For me the light beams make the picture. As you can see in the picture attached to this reply, I felt the piece of rock in the middle was in the way. So I went there and took the pic from that point.

Not sure if you are interested in my opinion, each one has their own tastes, be here it goes.
This pano and the previous framing all have elements of interest, which are mutually exclusive, but they also share some interesting and difficult features.

The first set has more sense of depth, showing all the slope down to the lake, with its beautiful texture. The lighting is reasonably uniform across the whole composition.

In the second image there is a clear divide between foreground and distant ground; these two are also separated by a great difference in exposure. In this case I think the image would work better if one went one or another of two opposite directions. One possibility is to bring up shadow detail from the foreground, while trying to make the exposure as harmonious as possible in the far ground. The other is to give more emphasis to the far ground and the silhouetted figure in the notch; work on the exposure and colour of the far ground, letting the foreground go black and cropping out a good portion of it, to make the other walker disappear, while keeping the ridge profile intact.

Both have the defining feature of the rays, which also means that this is difficult lighting that poses technical challenges to the image. I seldom manage to get decent enough results from hazy and backlit landscapes like this, but I think with some work both could become good images.
Personally I feel the first composition will work better in black and white (perhaps with a slightly less dark sky).

Thanks Jakov!

Thanks for the inspiring images of Kilchurn castle, this is another of the locations that I did not manage to "squeeze" in my schedule and the images are telling me I should go back for it.
In my dreams I would have shot it from the shore opposite to the jetty.
There is still a chance that I'll do it at some later point though, it is only a 7 hours drive from home :)
Maybe an autumn visit to Dave could fix this missed opportunity, and a few others.  ;D

I'm astonished at the range and quality of the images being posted by absolutely everyone, and delighted that Scotland was so stimulating. What a week that was, and I've been missing "my photographers" as Mayumi used to say. The weather finally broke in midweek and we have had some heavy rain, but the gardens and the rivers needed it. And this afternoon the sun shone again and I had a long walk with my son - in a really beautiful place I had never seen before. I wish I could take you all there.

So I'm signing off with a few "people" pictures. Thank you all for making last week so memorable.

It was fun to wait for the extremely brave men to kayak down the Etude.
We were all photographing the vent. I decided to set the camera on a stone and try a long exposure.
The first one went down and I was happy with the results eagerly expecting the second one to stream down, and then I saw Erik with his fish getting on to the edge and trying to get in close. What a guy :)
I know it has been posted here before, including Erik's shot of the kayaks up close, but I thought of sharing these three I took :)

Not all that slim. The weather we had during The Week has pretty much remained the same here - warm sunshine, cool breeze, very clear air. We had some rain last week, mainly overnight; I've been out shooting every day.

Scottish weather is usually pretty reliable in May/June and Sept/October; this year March was fantastic (this is unusual). The months to avoid are July and August - wet, humid, lots of midges, LOTS of tourists.

I found time to edit this again. This time using NX-D to get a much better starting point.
As soon as I am finished I share the results with you

[recipe] How to cure a dead lamb

Life teaches that death is the point where we stop to feed on other life and other life starts to feed on us. Just because this is the course of life does not mean we should skip thankfulness for all life that we feed on. I guess if we would be more thankful and thoughtful for our life and all life that dies to feed us, we would quite possibly live more harmonious. That is my basic understanding when I cook.

Humans are distinguished from other life by cooking.

When I decided to prepare lamb in Scotland I first had to find good ingredients. I asked Dave to find the best butcher in the area and when I had his name and address I asked Anthony and Simone (Surace) and Thomas to accompany me. A wonderful day out. I guess someone took some pictures.

Butchers were priests to many gods in our history. To reign the line between life and death should be an act of decency and dignity. With the best butchers this tradition is still alive, if only as a faint background tune. And one can taste the difference.

Cooking can be done in a technical sense or it can be done with purpose. So I caressed both legs of our lamb with fine Italian vinegar to open the pores for salt and spices and I said “thank you, your sacrifice made sense, you are at center stage of our little feast”. Then I grinded the wonderful sea salt harvested from the shores of the Outer Hebrides with some extremely tasty fresh rosemary and garlic (Simone found them) and caressed it again. After the marinade soaked into the meat I added some fine Olive Oil and cooked it slowly for 8 hours in the stove.

The trick is to watch the cooking. The meat shall not get dry or too hot, that is why I used a thermometer to see the innermost temperature not raised beyond 82°C. So you want to use a cover of some kind, some thoughtfully applied aluminium foil will do.

Now you can do it as I did. Hope someone will add some pictures.

Love

Frank

PS: I did not have decent light on me or a tripod not the time to set anything up, so here is the curing process in some strange form:

Thomas, Thank you!
The light and atmosphere is very well captured!

I doubt the story you tell is closly knit along the path of reality.

Butcher one, family of butcher two was not very customer oriented. I wanted two legs but he did not ask for my wishes in detail.

Truth is legs contain a lot of meat in one piece and some big bones, which is great for a slow cooking roast from the stove as planned by the chef.

The chest contains a lot of small bones with little meat between them, which is great if you want fast cooking chops for a barbecue or frying pan not planned by the chef.

The second butcher asked exactly what I wanted and I got exactly what I wanted. The first one only had one leg anyway.

if you go into  a shop and let the  salesman do something especially for you - here cutting a lamb into 2 halfs
is an artisan work that allows no withdrawal from the purchase (EU law - maybe outdated in UK soon)
sawing the poor animal apart is documentent in my pictures ...  I reported this a s a funny eventand want to keep it as this in my mind
how it tasted had nothingh to do with the purchase process

The first butcher only saw the amount. The second butcher saw the requirement.

Both were wonderful.

#1 saw his personal perspective. What he wanted and needed to sell.

#2 saw that there was a cook who wanted to create something special and he could help and earn.

Both have great faces!

My one regret about Scotland 2016 is that we didn't have time to explore Glencoe in addition to Glen Etive (which we visited twice). Glencoe is known for its history and its mountains, but there is much more than that. Mayumi and I were there yesterday on a wet stormy day.

2. Looking east from the Glencoe road.
3. The "Glencoe Lochan".

5. Falls on the River Coe.

I have tried to do as much as possible during the short days while I was there, but there was not time for everything and I am hoping to be back in the autumn, possibly October. I have a number of things in my list, including yellow larches.
That will require cooperative weather and the wife consenting to me going away a weekend.

Simone - it would be a great pleasure to show you something of Glencoe - or wherever - this autumn, but bear in mind that I can no longer do any kind of hillwalking or strenuous hiking; even on the flat I am limited to about 2 miles, max. Changed days.

The sender was Thomas (Stellwag); we are delighted with the print and deeply grateful to Thomas and anyone else who might have been involved.

For me, this is what NG get-togethers - like Scotland 2016, Lofoten, and my meets in Tokyo with Mike Selby and Akira - are all about. I don't mean getting presents, nice though that is, and I don't even mean photography (which is the catalyst) - I mean friendship. And of course this applies equally to all the other get-togethers, like Maastricht, which I wasn't able to attend.

So thank you, Thomas, my friend.

This will not be its final resting-place, but I want it to be seen by as many visitors as possible, so for now it is in the central hallway of the house, just beyond the always-open kitchen door. So as we tend to congregate with friends in the kitchen, all who come will see the print, and of course, the frame. Both are magnificent.

Not a very good picture, this.   :-\

Kudos to Erik and Thomas!

Lovely image Erik and great work Thomas.  I hate the saying, but for once a really nice example of "working outside of the square"!   ;D

Your pre-trip metalwork Erik in creating the lens support system has paid real dividends in enabling the capture of this style of  image.  Preparation is everything.

Compliments also to Dave and Mayumi on what looks to be a beautiful spring garden.  (I  see  a lot of solar panels - worthwhile at your northerly latitude?)

Dave, this looks amazing. What an exclusive photograph to have on your wall ...

Yes, I couldn't  agree more. How nice that so many NG members have come this week to visit our house, as it were, in order to see the framed print. And yesterday we had a visit from a very distinguished London photographer (now retired) who spent about half-an-hour examining the print and the frame - both got top marks, of course.

I look at the print many times every day - every time I enter or leave the kitchen, in fact - and its uniqueness impresses me every time. Thanks again, Thomas and Erik.

Hugh - yes, the panels do very well. Our electricity bill is 35% lower, and we get a useful chunk income from sales to the grid.  8)

I'm very sad to hear that Sally has lost the battle despite the loving care and attention lavished on her over many months by you and Mayumi. I can imagine that its going to be a real struggle for you to get out and around the headwaters of Loch Tay without Sally's companionship. You and Sally were regulars there. My sympathies to you both.

Thank you, Mike, for your sympathy and for the photos of Sally (especially that *very* flattering one of me!).

Thank you too, JA, Frank, Armando, Hugh, Akira, Jakov, Erik, Thomas, Anthony and Chris, for your kindness. It really helps.

I was broken-hearted when the vet left this morning but I knew we had done the right thing for Sally. Her deterioration in the past week was faster and deeper than I could have imagined, with multiple very upsetting symptoms including, quite obviously, a lot of pain. Now we have the pain but it will slowly fade.

Thank you so much, Andrea, John and Bjørn - it seems that many of us understand the hurt of losing a favourite dog. It can go very deep.

David, I've never met you or Sally, but believe me, we feel your pain. I've been in your position too many times for my liking, it's always a traumatic experience. In the last few years we have been taking in rescue dogs (Bullmastiffs), and they're almost always old dogs by the time we get them. They quickly become a member of the family, and losing them is cause for grief.

On the other side of that you must recall the goodness, the love, and companionship that the Sally provided, and the loving home that you provided for her. All dogs should be so lucky to have such a life. Sadly that is not   always the case.

Erik - thank you. So many friends - in NG and not in NG - have sent their sympathy and their photographs, it's quite humbling. Lots of people obviously understand very well what it means to have to kill (not "put to sleep") a much-loved pet animal. The hurt can go very deep, as it did with me. I don't think we'll have another dog.

David,
It has been over 20 years since I lost my dog, and I would love another one but could not bear the heartache of losing it. Your loss did bring me to tears (something that almost never happens), as I felt for you and it brought back memories.

Some people could never understand, but I am sure many do share our thoughts.

Best Regards

Bez - thank you for that. It's comforting to know that others, like you, have been deeply affected by the death of their dog; and that my grief over the loss of Sally isn't just some kind of exaggerated self-indulgence. These past few days I've cried as I last cried when I was a child, and it's not over yet.

Thank you again.
With best wishes,
David

It is always hard to lose ones dog or cat, but a replacement animal really is a great antidote to the loss of a special pet, such as your Sally.  I know from personal experience.

David, first give yourself some time.
