366 days: your 2016 in photographs
Rules: Post a file with EXIFS for the day. Tell us where and when and what and why.
Question from: Gary on Today at 18:05:30: Can I use a camera phone?
Answer: Pin hole in a shoebox ... Video capture ... whatever. Darn. I did still not take a single frame I want to show.
Somone shuts the Door for the day.
So if for the last of us 1.1.16 is over in NZ anyone can post a message:
Old.Day.END
New.Day.BEGIN
After that only New Day.entries are permitted.
Before that only Old.Day.entries are legal.
This is how we separate the days.
If the day is gone in New Zealand, then no new pictures of the old day.
NZ time is date line time is CET+11 or UTC+12 or PT+4.

I suggest we start in one thread and see if it becomes necessary to split later. By month or by week for example.

Hello NikonGear friends; Happy New Year to all.
This is the lake at our home, with open water on the first of January. From 1980 thru 1995, the lake was frozen-over several weeks earlier in most years. I don't think I've ever seen open water on Jan 1. This lake is in middle New Hampshire, USA.

Frank .. forgive me, it's the day after new years eve and I'm not sure my mind is in a state to comprehend the concept. Is it your intention we must post an image on a daily basis during 2016?
This is a shot from the first evening of 2016 - it has been a lazy and foggy day. In about 3 months I will probably be able to shoot the same subject hand held to the sound of birds singing. I hate the darkest time of the year - winter solstice was 10 days ago and I'm looking forward to spring and more day light!

you can post one per day if you want.
you are not forced to do so.
it is a nice exercise though to shoot and post one every day.

Bruno,
your image has a certain touch to it. It has the looks of a historic field recce shot.
It does not feel too save to approach the builiding ahead as battlefield illumination and tracer is shot in the background.
The smartphone does a good job in 'pushing' the iso and keeping a realistic grain and shade differenciation.
I like it.

Gary. I try to separate the days. Currently shots of 3.Jan 2016 are called for.
If you miss one day it is fine. But please do not post shots from 1.Jan on 3.Jan.

Will it be everyone for himself or will we start to speak through our pictures in a q&a manner?

"Dappled light" on third of January.
Like on Øyvind Tøiens photo yesterday, the sun is quite low where I live as well. Underwater this give very little light due to the total reflection. But close to the surface one can get a nice effect that is called "dappled light" in a book I have about underwater photography, written by Martin Edge.

Star trails in the night on Jan 3. Not perfect as some light clouds drifted in and I am far from mastering Deep Sky Stacker yet; 30sec exposures at f/4.5 and ISO 640, every 33 sec. for ca. 45 minutes. BTW, both with my D5100 and D7100 a 30 sec. exposure setting keeps the shutter actually open for 32 sec, thus the interval must be set slightly longer than expected.

Rain Again
It is not the amount of rain that makes the soil fertile and the land rich. It is the amount of rain that is effective, soaks into the soil, feeds the plants and animals, the mushrooms and micro organisms. Runoff and puddles which erode and compact the soil are wasted rain (an wasted sunlight later).
Any soil that receives between 2 and 200 inches of rain per year can be managed effectively, can be managed to thrive or can be managed into desertification:

I see. Yes I had my reasons to do it this way. I publish my photo's and this one will go into an article about the weather as illustration. In order to prevent claims or negative remarks (Tilburg is a relative small city and with more than 5.000 daily viewers it happened more than once that someone recognized someone) I make sure they are not recognizable (enough) so I let the biker in the bokeh. (more or less, it's always a bit of a gamble).
It's not really the most preferable way in many cases, but on the other hand, it's part of my day, of my calendar. ;)
-
John: In Germany we have a lot of trouble with street photos. Even this biker might still be to "recognizable" when it comes to our current law. As a photojournalist you might have some more freedom though. Where can we see your daily work?

January 7, 04:05 AM capture of the Catalina comet showing as a blue-green sphere to the lower right. (A tracker would have been necessary to capture the tail). The stripe pointing towards the comet may be a satellite or a meteorite. The comet was found by following the long "tail" of Ursus Major another length down to the the prominent Arcturus star which has a warm color, and then up 2-3 heights of a 105mm (DX) frame and a little to the left. Contrast was challenged by some aurora, seen as green shimmer in the left part of the frame.

Gary: Caterpillars are happy with the rain? All good or all flood at your place?
All good Frank. In anticipation of El Niño I installed a rain gutter system. The yard is on a bit of a grade, a retaining wall in the very back, a three foot drop, then a downward slope to the front. Until this year the patio would flood and the areas near the house would swamp. With the rain gutters and barrels I have significantly reduced the flooding and swamping. I have repeatedly emptied the rain barrel water into the koi pond, potted plants and flower beds. (I have an extensive potted veggie garden all cosy in pots ranging from 1.5' to tree size pots.) I have discovered the need for larger rain barrels.
The caterpillars tend not to feed during the rain. The above caterpillar is a Monarch. We have caterpillars and butterflies all year long. Monarchs, Whites, Sulphurs, Painted Ladies, Morning Cloaks and Swallow Tails are the most common. We've choose many plants based upon butterfly and hummingbird attraction. (We have hummers all year long also.) Often, the Monarch caterpillars will completely strip a Milkweed plant and we have to round-up and move the caterpillars to different Milkweeds.
This was the first El Niño storm to hit Southern California ... Apparently many more are stacked up and making their way across the Pacific. The problem with California rain is the heavens open up and dump everything at once. It doesn't rain very often in Southern California, but when it does it isn't gentle. Combine a heavy rain with a steep terrain (local mountain are approx. 10,000' high), barren foothills (massive bushfires burned all the hillside vegetation) and you have a formula for flooding and mudslides on a Biblical proportion. The flood control channels and rivers are wild and peaking with exploding, brown choppy/churning water. The Los Angeles River is largely concrete and at it's peak was designed to move 146,000 cubic feet of water every second. The Colorado River, sculptor of the Grand Canyon, can't do a quarter of that. California receives about 25% of the annual rainfall of France, but we have twice the amount of flood control.
After four years of drought, this is a good thing, but be careful for what you wish for.

@ John: Yeah, winter is pretty mild out here. What is really nice is that the mountains/snow is less than an hour away, the beach is 30 minutes away, LA/Hollywood is 30 minutes away, wine country is 90 minutes and the desert is two hours away. I have Hummingbirds and butterflies in the backyard year long. If you could put up with horrible traffic, high taxes, high housing costs and no parking ... you would probably like this place.

Today 15th Jan is "Makar Sankranti" Festival in India and it's a holiday.
"Makar Sankranti" is a Hindus festival celebrated in almost all parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh in many cultural forms. It is a harvest festival.. "Makar Sankranti" marks the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in India; yes technically winter is over :D. It's 29°C/84°F right now anyway, in Bangalore!
Especially today, my grandma and my mother used to make a bengali sweet made with rice flour dimsum filled with coconut, milk cream and date palm jaggery -- known as 'Pitha'.
In some states especially in Gujarat, this festival is celebrated by flying kite. Sky will be full with kites in every direction. This year they are even celebrating International Kite Festival. In Bangalore, not so much. I noticed hardly one or two kites in the sky.
While the sun was setting, I saw this family walking back home with a kite. The scene made me very happy!

Sparkling wines don't store well, I felt the need to start popping open some of my older stock before they start to un-sparkle.
I recommend high pressure sparkles (methode teaditionelle or champagnoise) to be consumed within 24 months after "Degorgier"...
Low pressure (like a typical Italian) within 12 months
I might help if we are at it...
-

One thing I really want to do is to travel round China and try all food they offer. Why not eat snake or dog or cat?
I feel I could eat my way through India too.....
I general terms it is the quality of the cook that determines the quality of the food.
Second in line is the quality of the ingredients.
Best food is best ingredients prepared by the best cooks.
I strongly recommend "Chef's Table .... Netflix Original Series" .... the best cooks with the best ingredients
and some great photography too.

@ John- I would love to share some of my warmer weather with you. I fear that good weather would make you soft like moi.
Yesterday was grand, the weather the food and the wines all came together. The wineries weren't crowded and the freeway traffic was even less than average. We polished our visit off with dinner at this extremely tasty Italian Resturant by the freeway. It was funny some of the wine tasters we chatted with at Vindemia also showed up at the Gourmet Italia where we were dining.

Frank, I think you would have savored every moment. You, Mister Food Photography, would certainly appreciate the menu, food and presentation by the chefs at Thornton. We sat outside in the patio watching the food servers deliver the dishes to the patrons ... Each plate looked delicious with an artful presentation. During breakfast Mary Lou said "... Look at the blue sky, the white clouds, the snow on the mountains, it is a perfect day."
Today is a holiday here in the US, Martin Luther King Day ... Mary Lou is off from work. The very first thing she said this morning is "Are we going back to Temecula?"

The temperature actually dropped below zero degrees Celsius last night, luckily I was working from home to capture my new neighbours grazing in the frosty white grasslands from my kitchen windows.
Really dig these windows btw, they are like a living painting with an ever changing scenery. Last Friday a fazant sat 2 meters from the left window, we spotted each other at the same time so there wasn't any time to make a cool shot but for a guy whom lived in Amsterdam for the last decade it was a rather special moment to see such a beautiful bird from his own kitchen ;D

Depends on the bandwidth in both directions and the latency. I'd only fully account on symmetric pipes with less than 25ms in country ping.
BTW: My copper ADSL does 1.6 mbit down, 288kbit up stream. A lot of ping time and jitter. Might be jealous on your VDSL or Vectoring connections as well, even though that's transitional technology only.

Today we had the start of the storm from across the Atlantic, set to last three days it seems...
Nearby there is an old river barge 'Oakdale' which an old chap called Dave and his white Alsatian lives on, I have been a bit concerned for his welfare because I had not been able to raise him yesterday, I knew he must be on board because his boarding ladder was neatly stowed on the cabin roof.
This morning the blow started. High tide was for about one O'clock so I went down to check if his bilge pumps were working, a sure sign that he was active. To my great relief I saw water spewing from three outlets, so I went back for my camera.

Well done Anirban. Good exposure, good composition, good documentation. I applaud that you saw and captured the story, again well done. (But, some food for thought ... I might have tried a longer lens to compress the image. The dogs in the background are a very interesting element, a longer lens would/may have made them a bit more prominent and the compression may have added more drama, more impact.)

Thanks Fons.
A deserted meetingroom. In 2015 the 'Houtloods' one of the older buildings in the 'Spoorzone' in Tilburg (19th century) was completely renovated with offices. There is also a good restaurant.

So many great shots. Thank you. Special mention to Chips sculpture with shadow and Johns Restaurant with a view
Thank you all for the good wishes. I am still spending most of my time sitting by the hospital bed waiting for the son
to recover. My rib is better and my fever seems to be better. Coughing is also more productive and healing. Daughter also sick

This morning we have 'ausdauernder Landregen' and heavy wind, which could be translated to 'power drizzling over hours'...
One has to stay in not to risk the gear as long as no housing or other waterprotecting equipment is available.
I did a window study, trying to catch the weather mood.

Awaiting the pupils for the early physics class
Jacques, the cold vs warm light in your image is extremely clever done.
A cold empty classroom and lab coats with a little warm light seeping through the little window soon to be followed by a steady flow of students to warm up the classroom and lab coats. Or at least thats what I see in the image :)
-
Thanks Jan, my wife is the photography tutor at this school ( I walk her over to make sure she is not late 8) ) one day a week lessons start at 8.30 rather than 9 so this contrast in lighting would not be that way on the other days, this is the benefit of always carrying the camera and keeping my eyes open !
-
Great shot indeed, Jacques.
Nice experiments, Thomas. We have the same weather...

It really catches ones eye, the colorful ubrellas are an element of that, I think.

John - rain photo Reply #458 is crisp, very nice! I like your Df + 105/1.8 shots.

Frank - I like the man on tractor shot. It’s been forever I’ve been to a farm. In Bangalore my friend owns a start-up company, where they take school kids and even corporates to farm for “agriculture tour”. Kids get to see how vegetables and crops are grown. Corporates can drink and bond with their colleagues under natural settings.

Arniban. I like the more abstract version. Yet I feel the BW not to be necessary.
My guess is that the edit of the first and the crop of the second would perfectly combine
In #467 I like the color and texture conglomerates. It is not only thr cup.
