Wind pressure from a fast train initiates an avalanche. Perfect when you had your camera already set up, less perfect to wait long enough to get the shot then make a quick escape to avoid the oncoming snow :D

"Local train" in suburb of any Indian metro. Not so fun. It gets unbelievably crowded during rush hour. You might faint unless you are used to traveling like this. Mumbai tops - 7.5 million commuters daily on these local trains. Kolkata is not far behind - around 4-5 million commuters daily. Here are some shots from one of the suburbs in Kolkata.

A commuter train slowing speed before its arrival at a small station north of Oslo, Norway. End of December and with the season comes very low light, so using the Df with a 600/5.6 Nikkor on a sturdy tripod was the only sensible approach. I had to wait until the train nearly had come to a complete stop, though, otherwise the image would just be a big blur of movement.

Trains at Aarhus Hovedbanegård (https://flic.kr/p/AghLW3) by Joergen Ramskov (https://www.flickr.com/photos/jramskov/), on Flickr
The trains with the red lights on are our "great" IC4 trains, that is supposed to replace our IC3 trains (the right most train is an IC3). The IC4 trains (built by AnsaldoBreda in Italy) have and continue to be a huge scandal here. They were supposed to have replaced the IC3 trains in 2003-2006. The last train set (82 in total) was delivered in september 2013 and the trains continue to be quite unreliable. A report estimates that 77 of the trains will be usable in 2019. A particularly strange part of the story is that one set was never delivered as it ended as a gift for Muammar Gaddafi from Silvio Berlusconi.

Thats one big boat!
Some years back, the South African navy sunk 5 ships (retired them) to form a new artificial reef in the ocean - I am not sure what the reason was - but those sites are dived non stop. They have become home to countless creatures.

A couple of boat pix, the first, a Severn Barge, one of two surviving examples. One man and his dog live on the barge full time. The dog is a large white Alsatian which jumps on his masters shoulders and is carried up the ladder onto the boat whenever they board. You can just see the owners head to the left of the stern.
The second is Astute, on her maiden voyage from Barrow to Glasgow, November 2011. In the background is Piel Castle, which sits on an island in the main channel, 'guarding' the approaches to Barrow.

I hope this counts as a boat. Car ferry, anyway.
-
Pacho: excellent treatment of the railway station. The tracks are well presented.
Tommie: scenic fishing vessels and image clarity is endearing too.
Robert, that is a picture in which the IR "treatment" actually enhances the outcome :D
Anthony: as long as it floats, it belongs here. When it doesn't float any more, it is a ship wreck. I guess it still fits the description of the thread :D
********
On a tangential line: I think these threads needs comments and interaction otherwise they just develops into sheer exhibition of one's work. Nothing wrong with images posted so far, in fact, many are marvellous, but the viewer becomes comfortably numb after a while. So folks, look and comment.
-

Thank you Bjørn, the sky bothers me but it was a grotty grey in real life and it the NEF, I have been tempted to graft in a nicer sky but resisted, in the interests of originality.
-
It is the expressed visualisation of the photographer's intention that counts, so feel free to "graft" anything you please. That being said, the best strategy still is trying to get as much as possible right in the camera - surely saves one a lot of time later in the work flow. The statement that one can always "fix something later in Photoshop" tells me the person asserting such viewpoints never will become a good photographer.

......................The statement that one can always "fix something later in Photoshop" tells me the person asserting such viewpoints never will become a good photographer.
Oooh. Your blanket statement just put out of the job all the Fashion and Beauty photographers as well as Portraits photographers from Steve McCurry to Testino - Demarchelier - Meisel - Sorrenti - Richardson - LaChapelle - Walker........Mert&Marcus..............and all others as well!!!!!
-
You cannot interpret my statement to imply this. The point I tried to make is that a good photographer needs to be conscious enough of what he or she is going to achieve in the end, and not be sloppy and try to "fix" the deficiencies later in Photoshop. That glamour photography is a make-believe kind of business where the appearance of the models is retouched and polished in post processing does not change the fact the photographer should do the job properly.

Actually the answer and the balance is in the same post. Anything is fair game if it serves the image -or so I understand and agree- but it is no excuse for bad technique. I had to work with such a photographer in an event -he was under my direction and supervision- He didn´t even try to get a good exposure from the flash because he could do it later in PS... or so he thought

Beautiful photos Robert. D200 continues its legacy. ;)
-
I endured a verbal onslaught from a purveyor of Nikon photographic gear recently, he was showing me a PC lens, explaining how it could correct architectural exaggerated perspectives and similar tricks. I politely declined, pointing out that for the most part that can now be achieved in post processing and it wasn't generally a problem I had, certainly not one I could justify the expenditure need to purchase a PC lens to deal with anyway.
He went on and on calling the people who rely on Photoshop for suchlike remedies cheats, fraudsters and worse, he was quite abusive. The result of which is I shan't darken his door again. No matter how enticing his wares. >:(
-
Well, as usual, the truth might be found at some intermediate position. While it is certainly true that you can correct geometry such as falling lines later in Photoshop, and see little loss of quality if you start with extra resolution and the degree of adjustment is moderate, it also is true a dedicated PC lens can do the job quicker and even better, but of course at an additional cost. Creating "deep" sharpness zone by application of the Scheimpflug principle is easy with a tilt/shift lens and dare I say, awkward at best in Photoshop. On the other hand, mimicking reduced depth of field to create a "toy impression" is easy with a tilt/shift lens and even easier in Photoshop.
Thus one has to find the appropriate balance in each situation.
-
Thank you Anirban, I have mainly used the D200 since 2006, for most needs it serves me well, the resolution isn't an issue, I have some quite large prints (1,000mm across the diagonal) which are well sharp enough and remain admired by everyone.
I have found with the converted bodies they seem much sharper since the anti-aliasing filter is removed. With the humble 18-105 VR lens @105mm, I can make out the cows legs about 6 Km distant at 100% in that IR image of the boat.
Moving on to the D300s has opened up new possibilities for low light photography, I keenly await a D3 later this year which I expect even more possibilities.
-
Thus one has to find the appropriate balance in each situation.
With my limited budget and with scanty expertise with T/S, also keeping to a minimum the gear to carry, I opt to sort details like that out at home! I feel saving for a nice D3 is more worthwhile than for a TS lens! I acknowledge the lens route is the optimal method technically but the software route gets the job done on the rare occasions it's needed.
I certainly didn't need the rude, abusive lecture I got from the camera seller. Particularly as a customer.
-
As a customer, one sometimes can get really put off by the response of a salesperson. I hardly ever been treated more condescendingly than at the renowned Grays of Westminister Nikon shop. Thus a place I'm quite unlikely to visit again.
-

...
As a fellow D200 user I completely agree with you. And, I often thought about converting it to IR, which isn't very easy in India except DIY.
-
A converted D200 was my workhorse IR camera for years. Its IR response in fact was slightly better than my current IR camera, a modified D5300. I finally replaced the D200 because of no Liveview and the not so good ISO performance. In image quality terms I had no complaints given its 10 Pix sensor.

Robert is the River Esk from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway?
No Mike, my understanding is it was built for and runs on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, often known as Ratty, however I am not an expert so to could have come from elsewhere? The railway is now a tourist attraction but originally it served iron ore mines and a large granite quarry in the Eskdale valley.

It's a great favourite with the children, the round trip from Ravenglas up to Eskdale takes an afternoon and is very popular.

There are a number of different type of bridges over the Wilhelmina-canal in Tilburg. One of them is a movable bridge, were the 'road' is lifted and turns slowly into the middle. It leaves then room for ships to pass on two sides. This is however not an overview of that bridge, but a boat, to be in line with the topic ;)

Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain should be named side by side with Frank Whittle. They were the pioneers, I think one thought an axial, one a radial turbo jet. Both independently and at about the same time.
Both earned their patents and developed jet planes with the respective technology.
After WW2 they met in the sixties and stayed friends since.

Very nice thread. I used to do off shore racing in the Aegean late 80's early 90's, unforgetable experience. But, I was not a photographer then. First attachment: sailing in the Saronicos gulf. Second: a foggy day.

Elsid, last image is very much to my liking and it reminds me of home. Mediterranean sea, south of Spain, with a lot of huge boats crossing in and out

Golunvolo, I live in a seaside suburb south of Athens, which is about 30 kms from the commercial part of the port of Piraeus (our biggest commercial port). Therefore, you can see these ships everyday. The day the picture was taken (with the Nikkor 300mmE)
it was cloudy and a bit foggy. I assume the ships you see are crossing the Gibraltar straight, so traffic is on the "heavy" side.

Yes, they are, and the traffic is really heavy. With the right wind and clear skies you can see them all in a little corner of our planet with 2 continents, 3 countries and at least four languages all very close to each other were the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
The color of the water is pure mediterranean, makes me feel at home.

1. Fishing boats at Elmina town, Ghana. Taken from the walls of Elmina Castle, one of the slave factories along Cape Coast. Elmina castle was built in 1482 by the Portuguese, which makes it the oldest surviving European building in sub-Saharan Africa. The Portuguese made the castle a centre of the slave trade; the castle was seized by the Dutch in 1637 and the rest of the coast in 1642, and the Dutch ran the slave trade here until 1814, when Britain persuaded the Dutch to abolish their slave trade.
2. Fishing boat, Inle Lake, Myanmar.
-
Fantastic shots, Les.
The misty second looks like a magazine image :)
-
I like very much the "Cape Coast" picture. The haze is adding an extra dimension. 👍
-
Thank you. Elmina town is a fascinating place; Elmina Castle is the best preserved of about 40 slave castles along the coast of what is now Ghana, along with Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes but rebuilt by the British in the 19th century. The main Danish-Norwegian slave castle, Fort Christiansborg, is in the centre of Accra and is used as the seat of the Ghanaian government, so you can't get in or even photograph the outside.
Here is another one of the same scene from a lower viewpoint. The mist is sea-spray from a strong on-shore wind - it creates the contrast between the bright primary colours in the foreground and the pastel colours in the background.
-
Great Shots, Les. It is a kind of coastline we hardly see, nice contrasts.

How did the battleship go under the bridge ;D
There's a bit of false perspective going on, but it's an interesting question. The ship arrived in the cove in 1964, and the bridge was finished a year later. The height of the bridge is 254 feet between the spans, but only provides 135 feet of clearance. I haven't been able to find the height of the Massachusetts, but the Missouri measured 210 feet above the waterline. So I think the answer may be "Carefully. Very carefully."

Dear MFloyd, thank you for commenting. I have lived all my life by the sea (except the seven years I lived in Buffalo and Rochester NY) and
I never get tired of it, I love it. It changes every day every minute and it gives you a relaxing feeling, even when it goes wild.
The vignetting was added in PP. I thought would give the photo a retro look.

It is entirely possible that such shot can be had, as I'm sure that the activity continues at that location. Unfortunately, the location is in Durango, Colorado, a 9 hour trip from here, and I doubt if I'll return there. I will look to see if I can approximate the situation here.

The condition of the thread - NO planes - unfortunately prevents your wish to be fulfilled. Must search my archives, though, for such a picture and if found, post it in an alternate location.
Meanwhile, the Airport Express Train at Oslo Central Station has to suffice. Sorry.

Looking at approximating that combination of boat and train here turns out to be more difficult than I first imagined. The only location for that activity no longer has a train crossing the water, the only boats are paddle boats. There is a light rail street car that crosses the water but there's no location available to enable me to capture water traffic and rail traffic in the same shot. Besides, I think that reducing boats to paddle boats, and trains to street cars, seriously dilutes the intent of this thread. Folks might want to tar and feather me for such insolence. ;)
-
This is the nearest I could come to Elsa's request for train and snow and plane. Taken at 'my' local train station, obviously when snow was present. The cloud layer blocks off the sight of the airplanes above on their approach to Oslo Airport Gardermoen (otherwise, were a plane to be displayed, the picture would not qualify for the current thread :D )
-
Another train and snow scene. The conductor would wish to be somewhere else I presume ...
This is also a situation in which the photographer is thankful for the assistance provided by a good lens shade (the 105/2.5 with HN-8 hood). Having your lens filled in front with wet snow is unpleasant and counterproductive to your photography.
-

Flåmsbana (Flåm Line) is a side branch on the main Oslo-Bergen Line and the steepest standard-gauge railway in Europe. These days it is run exclusively as a tourist service and has become very popular as you go by train from the Fjords (typically arriving on a Cruise vessel) straight up to the snowy mountains over a short distance, a mere 20 km. Dedicated stations allow close encounter with water falls, a treat appreciated by the visitors judged by the surge in popularity of this service seen over the years. Each train set has two massive locomotives, front and rear, to negotiate the steep gradient.
Here two trains are standing by at Flåm Station, waiting for passengers to alight from the cruise ships dotting the adjacent fjord.
-
One of the high lights of the trip to Southwestern US deserts with Andrea a few years back was the encounter with freight trains and their interlinked diesel locomotives. Their sheer size, noise, and deep earth-shaking rumble when they passed us were amazing.
Here a train is passing at Kelso, in the Mojave desert, CA. Shot with my D200 IR camera and the 28-300 Nikkor. The train set had four locomotives in front and two in the rear, and must have been several km long all together. The racket it made would satisfy even Jeremy Clarkson of 'Top Gear' fame :D

Mike, no not crossing the bridge. I shot it from the Erasmus bridge though. The cruise ship was docked at or near the old Hotel New York, the base for the Holland - America lines. Nowadays, they still board this "harbour" and people on the cruise get to get e day in Rotterdam.

Steam-powered snow-blower
The full power of the Gotthardbahn’s steam-powered Xrot m No. 100 Rotary snow blower was used to tackle the great masses of snow. The jet of ejected snow could be directed up to 90m sideways and up to 18m in the air.
Heavy snowfalls and avalanches frequently held up rail traffic. The first vehicles with steam-powered high-speed bucket wheels to scatter snow drifts appeared around 1871. From 1890, self-propelled and pushed snow blowers become widespread in most countries with frequent snow. In January 1895, exceptionally heavy snowfalls closed the Gotthard railway for five days. The railway company felt compelled to order a steam-powered snow blower immediately. The SLM factory was unable to accept the order due to pressure of work. However, the Henschel engineering works in Kassel was able to deliver a non-self-propelled steam snow blower by January 1896.

Year of construction 1895-96

Okay, that one upgrades to seriously serious! ;)
The tunnel is amazing, but the creating that cutting wheel was also a marvel. Of course I'm one that loves mechanical things that are absolutely filthy, spewing oil and grease around, vibrating the ground and making lots of noise too! ;D

November 2011 had my wife and myself going down to see the famous Union Pacific 844 steam locomotive. We arrived ahead of the scheduled arrival of the old UP 844, but there were already crowds of others that also brought their kids and grandkids to see a piece of history that they might not ever see again.
While it was an exciting outing, most of my own excitement came from the fact that I couldn't get a clear shot of that massive engine, because of the massive crowd. The best that I got was bits and pieces, but sadly, no shots of the whole engine in one frame. Below you can see the problem from a photographer's point of view.

My girl friend Ruth takes interest in one of the large mural photographs of steam locomotives seen at Gdansk, Poland. These memories of the near past are found at the main railway station. The sheer photographic quality in terms of sharpness was amazing. Must be 8x10" captures at least.

We are truly spoilt for what technology now lets us do, but sometimes when you get to see large prints of photographs taken 60-100 years ago, you realise there was some great work happening then too.
I recently saw an exhibition of work from China, Thailand and the Far East. All taken on glass plates over 100 years ago, involving a huge amount of travel with big tripods & other heavy kit. I'm sure the people involved had enough funding to pay for sherpas etc. But the logistics of doing that long before international travel became easy and with no local facility to process the results still makes you think.
This last point interests me - can anyone advise if these people just carried the exposed glass plates around with them for a month or more before finally getting round to developing them? In hot humid conditions?
-
Probably brought developing chemistry as well. They would have to have light-proof tents or similar if plate holders were to be (re-)loaded en route.

If they were using wet plates (coated shortly before exposure), then they would surely have to had developing tents or carts set up. Amazing to think of the effort involved. Yet they generated some remarkable images in spite of these difficulties - images that were eventually printed and that we in the digital age can still enjoy.

Recently, you probably have read of the ship that went awry in Venice Lagoon. It is hoped that after this event ships will be banned from passing near the historical buildings of Canal Grande and Giudecca.
The ship was only 65,000 tons, not a big deal, ships three times as large enter the lagoon. Just imagine what could do a 200,000 ton ship out of control!
A couple photos
#1 could have had a place in the Objet trouvé thread. Title Look mama what I found on the beach!
#2 Towering above St.George's Church This ship is bigger than the one that made the news (95,000 tons), more than 60 m high (bigger ships are up to 75 m high)

Hugh, Elsa seems to be spending her energy on 'photos_and_tours by elsa on Instagram and business. I have not exchanged emails for some time. She is posting some excellent images.

I have always enjoyed this thread; it was started by Elsa Hoffman many years ago.
I recall that Elsa did not always enjoy the best of health and I have not seen her on NG for a long while now - does anyone know if she is OK?
Elsa is one of my friends on Facebook. She sometimes posts beautiful images of animals, birds and insects of SA as well as lovingly reckless jokes. :D

Thanks Akira.

I have always enjoyed this thread;
I must say that I do too, Hugh! While I have nothing in particular against boats, it's the locomotives that I love. I van recall back in the 60's when the Southern Pacific RR ran some of the Krauss-Maffei diesel-hydraulic engines, before diesel-electric models took control of the industry. Those diesel-hydraulic locos had a very aggressive, powerful look about them. I loved watching them pass though town. ;)

I'm wondering why we haven't seen Elsa post here on NG in such a long time.

Trains can be slightly scary!
This one is coming at you straight from the mountains.
BTW, this peak is 60km away and aptly named "Schreckhorn" (Schreck means horror in German).

A classic location of lasting interest for me. Must have been visiting there dozens of times. This time with my NEX-5N monochrome camera and the CV 25mm f/4 lens which is an excellent performer also for IR.

Thank you Lars! This is one of more local trains in Tokyo. They are not fast but feel more intimate than the busiest trains in this megalopolis. Hence the title.

From this particular viewpoint, the wrecked yacht looks like a huge mask of Vendetta, which makes the image even more surreal to me. Nice capture!

A ferry from 1952 named M/F Broen - now a piece of history and was "dry docked" on ground in 2020 close to where it sailed on the Storebælt strait between the Danish isles Sjælland and Fyn until 1966. Taken out of service 1992.

Thanks Erik - yes, it is worth a stop - I only had time for a few snapshots. It's close to the bridge and the small ice boat museum that is also worth a visit (I think they are closing the museum for the winter).

Thanks Lars. Below is an image of the train with its powerful, noisy diesel engine. The train is aimed at tourists, going very slowly and slows down at a number of points of interest like this view of Denali (North America's highest mountain) and its neighbor Mount Hunter.

Øivind - makes good sense that it's a very slow-going tourist train in such a beautiful scenery! I can imagine there are many great photo opportunities. I've travelled by train in the Austrian alps a few times and always wished the train would go much, much slower :)

A boatyard in Middelfart harbor on the isle of Fyn. They build clinker boats that's on the UNESCO world heritage list as part of the Nordic clinker boats tradition. In Middelfart part of the tradition is smakkejoller - smack dinghies with e.g. square shaped sails (is my understanding).

cherry blossom here is Mitsubishi car dealer party time, some Kawasaki dealer do it as well, but I think it is not under companies directive
what does the water sign in pic one with the 2 crossed out waves mean?

According to the quick search, the sign means that the boats must slow down not to generate the backrush that would make the boat hit against the quay.

thanks, that sounds reasonable.
In channels the suction pulls the boat at the pier away, then it hits the quay wall again, pulled back by the ropes and backflowing water
We have speed limit in those places, sometimes for long distances even in rivers, as well for saving the embankment

Some history & maybe some uneasy memories for some with this vessel.
I bet it might get Jürgen Prochnow nervous....!
Good timing to catch this Alaun
If that's the bow facing us (with torpedo hatches showing?), it doesnt seem a very streamlined design

"El Vaporcito del Puerto" used to commute El Puerto de Ssanta Mar'ia and the city of Cadiz from 1955 until around 6:15 pm of August 30th 2011, when it had a collision with rocks not far from the port. The trip takes 40 to 45 min.
This is the resting place of that specific historical boat.
