This gentleman appeared to spend most of his time on the satphone.  To be fair, the lighting conditions that morning on the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park were dull.

But this one actually was a swede. There were birds all over the place, so he had plenty of them in front of him also. The name Fuglesongen can be translated to the bird song ( http://stadnamn.npolar.no/stadnamn/Fuglesongen )

I vividly remember the 'Venus Transit' event of 2012. Bjørn J and I shared great adventures before and after the Transit.

The weird look of the front assembly of the 1200 mm Nikkor was due to the need for putting on a solar filter *and* keep light leaks away. When I assembled the bits and pieces, I discovered the diameter of the filter was slightly too small to allow the filter to slide over the rim of the lens barrel. Thus, danger of light leaks was imminent. I found that the front casing was hold in place only by a small grub screw and managed to get it out, thus removal of the casing was possible and thereby allowing the filter to mount safely. Not what you want to discover immediately before the unique Transit commenced, though. I got my shots so all is well that ends well.

Also nice to see the moderately sized Sachtler in action. The fluid head usually is atop its bigger brother.

There probably is a photographer in the most remote nooks and crannies all over the world. An example from the longest road tunnel of Norway .... But note the need for a high-visibility vest - shooting in tunnels close to speeding cars an be quite dangerous.

I avail myself of the following picture of a photographer wading an Arctic river in order to get to the desired location. Bjørn J took the picture, by the way, as being the subject, I was excused ...  Thus I can attest to the fact the water was literally ice cold, besides the currents were swifter than I had expected so having the Sacthler tripod as a support was of paramount importance.

Among Erik's lesser known talents is acting as a necromancer when he visits neolithic burial sites. However, photography reveals the truth.

Now that is a spooky shot Bjørn, I don't recall what grave mound this was - Also I don't recall the mist/water ghost  :D
I remember that most of these where pitch dark inside so whenever a flash fired it would take forever to be able to see again  :o
That was very interesting btw - Visiting forefathers grave mounds!

1, 2: This beach has already given a few portraits, of which one shows me (by Bjørn J). It is only fitting that I should show a photo of him in return. It should go without saying that the other is Bjørn R.
3: Two with one shot. Jørgen was too knackered having exceeded with the ethanolic drinks most of the previous night and lost a few opportunities on Ramberg beach
4: On that trip Dave was using a Pentax - it looked heavy!

There is a time discrepancy between camera and lens. That lens will mount but otherwise be dysfunctional on that camera.

As a photographer I respond to that subliminal message.

However it is indeed true that cameras tend to look better with a lens on them.

I get your comment - dont worry :)  I am from the digital era - I wouldn't know how to operate an older film camera like that. I find it sad that I missed the film era -

Your comment is actually very valuable Bjørn - because it does distract and make the image less credible - so definitely point taken.

A photographer tourist is fascinated by the vestiges of snow alongside this mountain road in summer. He should have been there a few months earlier :D (or not, as the road closes down when snow depth exceeds the reach of the snow clearance machinery somewhere around 12-15 m).

He tied down his hat - probably very wise measure. By the way, the jacket is Jan Anne's favourite brand too :D

Working in a maritime setting with strong wind is about the only time I would consider using a protective filter on a lens. Much easier to clean off salt deposits and grime from a filter than from the front of the lens. Plus seawater residues are fatty and often cause smears when you try to remove them.

Contrasts for the poor photographer can be huge.

First is Michael Reichmann (Of LuLa fame) at Geiranger, Norway. He wasn't entirely comfortable with the snow, despite his Canadian origin.

Next is Andrea crawling belly-down in the Mojave desert. Burning hot.

Nice protectective device. I think the little knobs are there to help with the helmet aerodynamics. They change the threshold for the transition from laminar to turbolent air current.
Handle attached at the center of gravity to ease the use. Reinforcements to compound the handle to the protective shell.
Very advanced design, camouflaged as a strawberry 8)

Armando, he was indeed the passenger on a moving bike but neither really looked happy as they came out of the Security Gate.  Their Royal Enfield was the most common type of bike at the show.  They look quite young.  Most of the Concourse Classics and $30-$60K bikes were ridden by 35-55 year-old businessmen, lawyers, Doctors, Hoteliers etc.

Nobody told me there weren't any street or homeless people there for me to shoot, so to make do, I spent the rest of the trip taking photos of my buds taking photos.

Armando, I really like it.  Brings back many memories from 8 years ago when shooting with my son.  It wasn't until he was about 10 years that he was able to get all of his settings right.

Unusual colours.  Unusual light ?   Last night we had the setting sun's rays bouncing off the cloud cover giving pink and purple light , not the 'Golden Hour' .
Many thanks for posting

This is where photography gets silly and revolting.

This picture is staged and belongs to Juliette Binoche starring in the movie: A Thousand Times Good Night by Erik Poppe.

The story line is in Afghanistan and nothing to do with Aleppo and it is a film still.

It is a FILM and not a documentary!

Unfortunately, this is where people like MFloyd get deceived into the media lies and spin.

Thanks for the insight Almass.
I saw that film a few years ago and hadn't made the connection with the image posted above.

Actually although the situation in Afghanistan was maybe as desperate as Syria, I thought parts of the storyline in the film was a bit preposterous.

I never suspected the picture to be anything but staged. But the fact remains, there are hardly any reason to be offendede by a picture from a war zone.

MF, not to worry.   I actually quite like the image.  Having been in a few War Zones I can tell you that I saw more than a few 'posed' images.  In fact my brother-in-law was posed for a news clip during the first Gulf War.  Made it to BBC news, what a laugh  ;) .  I, for one, have no desire to visit dangerous locations these days  and I only shoot flowers and bugs when bored :) .  Other folk have a real talent for shooting those things and get some stunning images.

Even though I have nothing but respect for war correspondents and photographers I would not want to trade places with them.

On a somewhat lighter note, photographers in action is somewhat of a favorite topic of mine because that allows me to photograph my girlfriend, who prefers to spend her time behind a camera rather then modelling

FYI: this was a special modification of the di-GPS the company made ad hoc for me when I complained about their product not allowing concurrent use of the GPS and a 10-pin remote. For many years now I use the BT devices by Foolography instead to avoid any cables plus getting a minuscule unit on the camera. The Foolography has a mini jackplug port so any run-of-the-mill remote can be used.

Title: Re: [Theme] How about photographers in action ?

Actually it was the D3 ... The camera split into the duo D3S and D3X a little later, both models of which are still in use..

On that SA trip, I used D3 D3, D3X, and D200. Just checked my archives.

Erik, nothing escapes your eagle eye :D I stand corrected. And should have known better :D

A renewed search in the data base disclosed that I indeed had a D3X with me on that trip besides the D3, and the D3 was yet to be replaced with the D3S. The latter model swap occurred a few months later.

I am the one in the balloon test-driving the D3 and 16/3.5 fish, shortly after the safari I sold all my safari gear (D300, D700, 200-400, 70-200, etc) and bought the D3s and a nice set of primes lenses like the 16/3.5 and 200/2VR.

Heck Mike, I guess you never saw "Rumpole of the Bailey" on TV, sad .  Anyway, She who must be obeyed  ;)  In fact I just sold another lens and she had spent that money at the Vet for her dog and cat while I was making the sale  ;) .  In fact I've sold approx. EUR 7.5K worth of gear in the past few months without buying any photo gear, now that is sad!

Thanks for the enthusiastic eclipse photography comments all of you. It was quite enjoyable; one learns to put on enough clothes for occasions like this, but I am glad it was -20°C and not -32°C as the night before and after the eclipse. As the tripod was busy my D5100 had to suffer to just be dug into the snow of the trail until it felt stable, and then used delayed or self timer release without remote. The coldest part is to break down the equipment after 2+ hours of loosing heat without moving too much around.

Yet another Event but I was not feeling too well so did not hang around for the real activity.   The young man shooting the Nikon D850, Sig 14 f1.8 is a student at the Photography school and used to pester me while I was shooting Soccer years back.  Shot with Sony a7iii, Batis 85 1.8  should have taken the D500  ;). At the concert of King Crimson, photographing and recording are strictly prohibited.  But only after all the repertoire for the show have been performed and when Tony Levin, the great bass player, pulls out his camera, the audience is allowed to photograph anything in the venue including the musicians onstage with the smartphone or the cellphone.

So, I pulled out my trusty iPhone SE and grabbed the shot.  The image was resized in CNX-D.

Gorse is truly an awful bush.

The Royal Society in the UK advised the settlers heading out to Australia and New Zealand in the 1800s to be very careful as to what plants and animals they introduced to these two new countries as they could not predict how they may respond to these new environments, but the advice fell on deaf ears.

NZ is over run by gorse, broom, ragwort, willows and has feral stoats, ferrets, weasels, hedgehogs, deer, pigs, possums, cats, dogs, wallabbies and various birds that have been introduced all to the detriment of that country.  Gorse sold at 1/- (shilling) per bush in the 1850s in NZ!

Australia did just as badly, with foxes added into the mix for good measure!

End of rant!  >:(

Armando, this was that in between time.  They had turned out the House Lights and were trying to line up about 40 young people on stage , so the stage lighting was also off.  The only light on was a spot on the background.  No attempt to recover shadows but Madam wanted a small bit of Soft Focus and Glamour Glow.  Otherwise no sharing  ;) . She was prepped for the open song and dance routine when the stage lights came on.  The young photographer has thanked me profusely and put it on his Facebook  :)

Helichrysum is a very powerful and pleasantly-smelling herb, I use it dried and finely ground as a substitute for curry (mixed with other herbs).

The bushes, unlike gorse, have no thorns and have more silvery-looking leaves and flowers.

But whilst playing with some macros (see Unusual Flowers thread elsewhere) I also noticed myself in the final image

Currently, Ruth and I are making a video presentation for an upcoming Music Therapy conference, which these days has to be virtual. Thus we need a lot of background images and it has been my task to look through my archives to extract suitable footage.

Today I found this which is too good not to be shared. Not useful for our Music Therapy theme, but as a homage to the eager Photographer, who is a friend of mine.  Many NG members might guess his name (and no, it's not me in an earlier manly identity). And the lens is nice, too.

This could also be called photographer inaction:

I'd been experimenting with remote capture using DigiCam Control.
Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get a wireless connection with my D500.
And my only USB cable with a Nikon connector was barely long enough to get sufficient distance using the 105mm!

Technical requirements could be well supported by the modern cameras, but the sensitivity to the critical moment should have already been excellently trained.

Today I found this which is too good not to be shared. Not useful for our Music Therapy theme, but as a homage to the eager Photographer, who is a friend of mine.  Many NG members might guess his name (and no, it's not me in an earlier manly identity). And the lens is nice, too.
Good to be remembered, not the eager photographer I used to be but interest is slowly coming back :)

Thanks, Colin, Venice was a last minute decision a couple of weeks ago to take advantage of the lack of tourists and cruise ships.

I think the business model of the second guy is doomed, as most tourists spend their time taking their own selfies. I have to say that my sympathy for him is diminished because he sets up his stand right in the middle of one of the world's great views!

Our hotel was at 20% occupancy and I guess that reflected Venice as a whole.

No actual action here, but this is me in 1962.

The tenuous thread is that behind me is a Riley,  made by the company British Leyland (which Fons reminded me is probably the British subdidiary of the Dutch partner)

No b&w conversion needed and low quality due using a smartphone on a 5x5cm print

No-no I didnt mean that it should be British Leyland, there was indeed a Dutch subsidiary they took care of business on the continent, as well as building busses, Stokvis assemblage.
Here is a wikipage that may interest you many of these carbrands where absorbed into British leyland, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_car_manufacturers_of_the_United_Kingdom (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_car_manufacturers_of_the_United_Kingdom)

I used to shot in bw on camera (love the nikon monochrome) but I have developed the tendency of shoiting in neutral and converting later. I get better exposure control and have a few bw presets in lightroom that get me a good starting point. This is one of such cases.
The presets created in LR are called "bw almost nikon", "almost Nikon II", "bwlandscape", "bwrecovery", etc... I guess the names are self-explanatory  :)

Those were the golden days of film. Digital was a pipe dream yet to come (although rumours had commenced), cameras were real cameras not computers, and men were men. Heck, even I was a man back then :)

For the record, my old personality here uses an Arca-Swiss F-Line camera with 120 roll film holder, long bellows, and the excellent Nikkor-T ED 270mm f/6.3. A speed monster in its time. I still have the camera gear, but it hasn't been used for decades.

Quick snapshot of the better half while shooting under an old train bridge in the desert near Socorro, New Mexico, USA yesterday. The reflected light seemed right even in the harsh midday sunlight. Nikon Z7ii 105mm F4, ISO 64, 1/250s.

Lovely portrait of a lady and her Nikon Z fc :)

Reflected light into the scene does reduce the harsh contrast for the better of the whole.

I'm often using the Viltrox 13/1.4 or 23/1.4 on the FX cameras, in particular with the Z9. Makes for a nice and small -- OK, the limit for perceived smallness is the Z9 of course -- combination. The Viltrox line delivers very respectable performance and on the FX Nikons the camera automatically records in DX mode. 19-20MPix suffice for many applications of mine.  Then there is the endearing and tiny Voigtländer 35mm f/1.2 which I purchased for the Z fc, but it often manages to meander over to the big Z9 brother.

The black beauty has a strong pull  :)

Unfortunately, you are ahead of time here. The black camera in question is the Olympus OM-D EM1.2 which I tried to put to alternative use after it failed miserably as an underwater system. I never really liked the camera and now it is relegated to be a close-up system of third rank. Probably will sell off the underwater housing system including the camera.

However, it is true that I now have the real 'black beauty' Z fc camera in hand and love it.

Lille (old town). Zf, Canon FD 28/2.8 at 4.5, probably.
This old cheap lens is not bad, except the bokeh (Nikon 28/2.0 is not better), flare (said Nikon is much better), distortion (correction in Adobe LR up to +8 if focused close), and somewhat mushy corners (which I cropped away). That seems a lot of exceptions but I had an enjoyable walk all the same. I bought it used in my Canon T90 times, then it gathered dust for about 30 years, and it works again on the Zf and feels like new (except for the focussing action that feels a bit dry).

Nice, and additional I tend to like the BW rendering the Zf does.
Same here, and I must say that BW *display* helps to focus on what matters for the final BW rendition. Generally I'm overwhelmed by colour and tend to forget about lines, so for years I shot slides and only used BW for industrial photos or organ photos, where colours are guaranteed to matter very little. Since I went digital, my BW shots were mostly second thoughts (a shame, in HCB's country) and I admired Edward Weston and others like gods with unreachable skills.

For me, the Zf is a game changer, in the sense that BW becomes a real subject. My earlier shooting sprees were generally the style "let's take this lens and get the most out of it', now it sometimes is "let's go BW and get nice shots". Valuating restrictions (see Akira's motto).

Same here, and I must say that BW *display* helps to focus on what matters for the final BW rendition.
For me, the Zf is a game changer, in the sense that BW becomes a real subject.

For what it is worth, any Nikon Z camera can be set to do the same thing. (Picture Control set to Monochrome and have the EVF reflect settings.) The Zf has the convenience of a dedicated switch.

I agree that choosing at the outset to seek B&W photographs changes the way our minds see things. It happened to me when using B&W film exclusively. I must try it with my Z6. Thank you for the inspiration, Airy!

We could have a fireside talk about that :)

I'd be happy to buy the first round Airy :)

December 10th. What you see in the background are the rock of Gibraltar and further left, the mountains in north Africa. The guy here was taking advantage of a very nice day and a mostly empty beach.

Ahh, I remember that view from May.
Seeing it look so sunny & clear now in December makes me remember the many benefits of being able to spend time in the South of Spain

Perhaps we need a sub-theme of photographic intrusions. :)

beautiful image, mixing some small colorfoul details (humans!) on a smooth washed-out background. Nice reflections too, from somewhat sharp to diffuse.

What is being reflected (faint yellow) on the left side? any kind of cliff, or a building?

Airy, thank you very much.
This is a reflection of grass in the winter dormancy phase on a very steep hillside.
The beach is at the top end of a fjord.
Dimensions are easily way off there.

Fascinating image...something about the huge blue field and the small but colorful humans...the camera angle...I like it.

If the framing is a bit off it's because she was more interesting than the photographers ;) Advert being filmed in Siracusa, Sicily.

This one was taken in 2009 on Ilford HP5+. I was not the only photographer interested in the steam-powered clock in Vancouver's Gastown.

Not quite in action, but I hit upon these two photo enthusiasts in Long Beach, CA, and stopped for a little chat. The vintage camera was worth a shot by itself in the evening light.

Agree.  I have the later model, the 124G which produces quite decent images.

Thanks Hugh, yes it was in such an immaculate shape. I recall these cameras from the time I started with photography, I might even have had a toy mockup model of a dual reflex camera at very young age.
