How about posting something that can fly - anything - as long as no one else has posted the same subject

I would like to challenge you to think wide  ;D

I see helicopters are in fashion :)

This was shot during our trip to Norway back in 2010. Erik, Aleksandra, myself and a pilot in his 20's showing off his skills.
When Erik and I spotted our shadow in one of the cliffs we both screamed to the pilot: "go back, do it again" having the same image in mind :)

I had a rush order for a front page and used my son for a model during the noon recess at his school. Rushed the films to the lab, 45 minutes waiting while films were processed and I read the newspaper,  found a frame that could be used, and had the slide at the printer's just before they closed for the day.

Oh, sweet film days ... or not. Their charm has gone stale.

Why? ... Just Why?

Gary, are you asking why we created that picture or are you asking why I brought a suitcase full of empty cans from The Hague to Copenhagen?

The picture is iconic, and although it did hurt, I will treasure the memories of creating it forever :)

As far as the cans go, well that is a strange one.
About a year before this shot was taken I was in CPH visiting Erik.
We had a beer. Once I drank mine I squashed the can for no particular reason. Erik politely informed me that these cans cost money and that you can return them to the shop (recycle).
Then I politely asked what is the difference if the can is squashed or in its original state? I didn't get a logical explanation apart from that's how it is.
So when I returned back to The Hague, I secretly started collecting cans. First in black garbage bags, then they were too small so I found a very old and huge suitcase in my cellar and I started packing them gently inside.
After about a year and a full suitcase I visited Erik again for the weekend. I only had hand luggage for the trip plus the cans :)
When Erik saw me at the airport he was confused why I was carrying so much luggage for just a weekend stay. But as soon as he grabbed the suitcase he figured something was strange...

Attached is Erik with the suitcase :)
Edit: I added the cans in the suitcase.

Thanks Jakov. Yeah, I was about why one would travel with a suitcase of beer cans only to have them dumped upon his head while sitting naked in a bathtub. A bit too kinkey for moi. The photo ... hell, that is not something you see everyday.

We have similar recycling laws here in California, but the cans can be crushed. BTW- beer tastes better in bottles.  8)

BTW- beer tastes better in bottles.

Very true - but preferably in a glass rather than straight from the bottle.

I wanted to sell them in CPH and reimburse Erik for that one can that I crushed so wickedly  ::)
We found out of course that we couldn't do that and those cans that can be recycled have a special sign on them.

Beer does taste better in a bottle and even better in a glass as Anthony suggested, but carrying it from the supermarket to your fridge is heavier.
Besides, cans in Holland are just thrown away, whilst beer bottles are either recycled or disposed of in special containers, hence a drag carrying them full to your house, and then carrying them again empty to wherever...

So I simply pour the beer into a glass from a can and have the best of both consuming and carrying worlds :)

The advantage of a glass is that the nose can enjoy aroma of the beer, which adds to the flavour.

Here's my flying thing.

Earlier in the day, I did lap after lap in the Mini WRC with Dani Sordo. This was in Fontjoncorse in France. The jump was about 45m long and had a height about 1.5m based on the measurements I did on other photographs. At the end of the day I was astonished about the roughness of the course. I was (and still am) wildly proud of the work I did on the suspension and steering on this car.

how cool is this  - tell more about the rocket please?

It is a replica of a sounding rocket, similar to those used for scientific study launched from Poker Flat Research Range north of Fairbanks. It stands mounted in front of International Arctic Research Center and the Geophysics Buildings at University of Alaska Fairbanks. From the wiki: "A sounding rocket, sometimes called a research rocket, is an instrument-carrying rocket designed to take measurements and perform scientific experiments during its sub-orbital flight." The word "sound" is here related to the word "probe". These are typically used to study the Aurora and the upper atmosphere.

The roughness of this course as seen here looks pretty scary !

Well, like any photojournalist I choose my angle to tell the story I want to tell. I was stood down in a hollow specifically to get the rocks in the foreground. The course does get pretty roughed up during the day, but not this rough.

It's a panning shot, one of several from a burst as you might imagine. Actually I used the wrong image, I meant to put up this one:

This is a more "honest" documentary shot, taken as the light was fading and thus with heaps of pan and zoom blur:

The mud here was spectacularly adhesive - the cars can pick up nearly 100kg of mud as they run around. In shots like these I realize why rally doesn't get the sponsorship of Formula 1; about 20 seconds in, the sponsors all become invisible...

A classic IR shot from one of my many excursions in and around Copenhagen, Denmark, together with Erik.

The airplanes took off from the nearby Kastrup international Airport in an incessant flow, so in order to get the shot, I just had to move to a clearing in the old oak forest and wait for the next plane to arrive. Got maximum a single chance per occasion as they overshoot us very quickly and I must have tried at least 10-15 times before I got the components framed as I wanted to.

As this picture has been published and printed a number of times, it appears I got the capture just right.

Pretty straightforward.  Hypsipetes amaurotis.  Shot with Nikkor-Q C 200mm/f4.0@f5.6 on Olympus E-M5 Mk II.  Handheld and very heavily cropped (to around 1/13 of the original frame).

Beautiful Hans!

Thanks Jakov. I shot this with my AW1. This was on a weekend "with the guys", so no big photo gear. However, this little thing frustrates the heck out of me (other than being used in the water), because it won't focus where i want it to.

Perhaps we should take our AW1's to the Utrecht meeting so that i can try to learn from you how to best use it on dry land  ???

Hans, I am frustrated as much as you are.
I have even read the manual several times, and there are things I just don't understand. I never managed to get the AW1 to focus where I desire.
However, it needs to be said that I was ecstatic when I found out how to change aperture and shutter speed in manual mode :D

Thanks all  :)  A challenge to get, and keep, it in focus.   Shot from approx. 11 feet with the BG about 8 inches behind the bee.  Using Af-on and firing 3 shot burst before the AF goes and locks on the BG.  Last year I had better luck with the D750, 300 2.8 with tc1.7.  I would like to get closer but it is about 8 feet above the ground and my step ladder is pretty shaky  :( .   Added just a touch of contrast.   This may not be the sharpest but some have gaps in the BG with bright light coming through.

How did I manage to miss this thread? So incredibly many impressive shots.

Going back to 2008, I went to an airshow. It seems I using a D300 and was shooting jpg only then. I recall using the 70-200mm VRI + TC20. I'm no good at editing today, my skills were even more lacking back then.

We (Denmark) are about to decide on a new fighter jet to replace our current fleet of F16. Even though it seems to be the most expensive by far and have massive problems, the JSF is said to be the favorite. Here is one on display - no chance of seeing it flying back then I believe:

I'm fairly new to the Zeiss lenses, but I continue to be impressed.

This is the 15mm Distagon on a D810.  I applied a graduated neutral density filter in PS (NIK collection filter) to bring out the sky.  Otherwise, this is pretty much as shot.  To my eye, it almost looks like some sort of composite.  Depth?  I don't know.

Jakov,

I am a private (not commercial) pilot.  I fly a single engine plane for a number of trips around the U.S.  I have been flying for 31 years.  Along with photography, it's one of my passions.   We shot video out of my plane (cargo doors removed) for air-to-air shots of about 100 planes when I was producing a series on aviation.  Had a ball doing that.

That is a great image of a beautiful aircraft, nice panning.  I never got to fly in a Super Connie.  About the time I made my first transcontinental flight (1964, LA to Washington DC) The 707 had gone into service.  My brother was flying F101s out of Oxnard AFB in the late 60's, should have bought property in Camarillo then !, but what do you know when you are 22 years old  :(
Thanks for posting.

Thank You ! I didn't fly with a Super Connie, but the Super Constellation Flyers Association (SCFA) in Switzerland is offering flights at approximately $400 (not very cheap) as you can notice here http://www.superconstellation.org/index.php/en/  You have to be a member (for a relative small fee), as the Swiss Civil Aviation authorities only granted a limited airworthiness permit.

As I was dallying in Janni's garden an interloper flew in, circled and found nothing of interest and flew out. I squeezed off three frames and this is the one I liked best. I can't help thinking that retractable landing gear would be beneficial.

"same subject" is now a tough one after 20 pages. Some superb interpretations. Possibly no air to air? I've spent about 60 hours in Poppa Tango November taking aerial photos. But not this time!

Three in one go? Why not after 20 great pages. Bill Lishman's (http://williamlishman.com/with-the-birds/) ultralight is suspended in the Museum Lantern across the street. It's got patina on it, too, but not from geese. This is *almost* air to air.

Good that you've revived this thread Oivind! Nice picture.

It's national lock-down here in The NL, so i'm browsing my photo database and processing images i hadn't processed before. Here one with some bats, shot at the Pont d'Arc (same outing as in https://nikongear.net/revival/index.php?topic=1867.msg165584#msg165584). Bats captured by using flash to light up the foreground a bit, i didn't know they were there at the time. A composite of about 10 images for the stars (stacked in Sequator) and around 5 or so for various parts of the foreground.
