When you post, previous posts are shown below. Mark the text you want to quote from any of these and click the "Insert quote" button. That's it.

Please teach me how to take and or extract a quote from somebodies post and then put it in my post. Thankyou.

If you get too much of the text, just remove it in your own post before submitting it. just make sure you don't delete the quote tags (in brackets).

You can make quotes from one or more posts several times,

Please teach me how to take ....

It is customary to put an ellipsis ... where you have removed part of the quoted text, to indicate something has been left out.

Thus, using your post again as an example,

...  extract a quote from somebodies post ... . Thankyou.

There may  be a better way, but I do it by using the quote button and simply erase everything except the portion I intend to quote.

Same procedure as I described, Tristin, so you are doing the right thing :D

Do remember not to delete the 'quote' or '/quote' tags otherwise your entire post will look like a quote itself.  Any moderator will edit to restore the missing tag (if possible), but we rather see this not being required !! It's not always obvious what error has been committed.

Almost but no cigar.

Same procedure as I described, Tristin, so you are doing the right thing

You need to include the field author=<name> in the opening quote.

Thus incorrect 'quoteBjorn Rørslett ' correct 'quote author=Bjørn Rørslett '

(I used ' instead of the square brackets to avoid upsetting our forum software)

That looks a bit better!

Mike, you shouldn't alter any texts in the brackets.  And you should add your reply outside the HTML brackets.

Here is a quote...

Mike, you shouldn't alter any texts in the brackets.  And you should add your reply outside the HTML brackets.

Here is what happens if I delete the first and last [] square brackets...

Here is what happens if I do not disturb the first and last complete quote tags but delete one sentence in between...

...  And you should add your reply outside the HTML brackets.

Consider the opening and closing tags as sacred!

I'm lazy and let the quote button write the BBCode for me.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Those are what the Mods have to put into sensible places when something seems amiss. However, if too much of the tag structure is deleted, it can be quite difficult to understand what is quoted and what is newly added stuff.

Therefore, do heed Dave's warning. Never touch opening or closing tag.

Bjorn, thanks for the pointers. My problem was that I'd forgotten how to do a quote, bloody hell it seems so obvious when somebody shows you how to do it :-[
